Having an extra 5711/1r with trade idea

Hey gang,

So in searching for my first Patek a 5711/1r (and buying it at a fair price) I have since found another that a dealer worked really hard to get me. Wanting to reward the dealer and build a relationship etc. I plan to buy it.

Is it reasonable to think that I might be able to trade it for a 5990? Would that even be a good trade?

Seems a new 5711 is worth 45-48. Is that about right?

Thanks for helping a newbie out!

Justin

p.s., will be at Basel next Friday night if anyone wants to catch up....

I would be honest with the AD and tell them that you were able to acquire the 5711/1R from another source, rather than buying a second one because you feel bad a dealer worked hard to find that watch for you.

I doubt you will be able to trade a 5711/1R for a 5990/1A as an equal trade. You probably need to add a few thousand to the trade. Once you purchase a watch from an AD, you usually are going to lose 10-20% of the value even if you decide to turn around and sell it the next day.

Yes I agree and I told him that I did in fact buy it a couple months earlier. I feel like its a worthwhile investment in a good dealer relationship since the first one came from HK. This gentleman seems to place high value in the relationship aspect of collecting- I agree and respect that of course.

A trade plus a few would make me happy :)

Yes I don't think any dealer would reasonably expect you to buy another of the same watch just for their sake, just try to buy the 5990 from him straight.

Agreed. It is not worth the hassle and think you'd need to add a few thousand.
