How do you clean your patek watch on leather strap?

You cant hold it under running water for various reasons obviously. Do you just wipe it with a dry cloth?

I've had my 5712 under Luke warm running water with soap but not for too long and it's fine... strap is cleaner and looks newer and freshened the inside of the strap too.
