42mm ROO vs 44mm ROO

All,

I’m looking at my first AP and I have my eyes dead set on an ROO. I’ve wanted an AP ever since I was in college, and loved the look of old 26170 volcano and navy.

I’ve been thinking for days but I am torn between the 26470 42mm ROO Navy/Havana vs the 44mm 26400 silver dial ROO. I’ve tied both on but still can’t make up my mind but here are some of my thoughts:

42mm
-more classic
-arabics look great
-some good color combinations, but some equally as bad ones
-steel bezel. Personally, I think the ceramic bezel looks a bit strange and I think the all ceramic look is kind of a fad

44mm
-I much prefer the look of the 44mm, but the 42mm is much more classic and easier to wear
-very sporty
-sporty dial, but simpler. In my mind this is a toss up for me between the more colorful and interesting dials on the 42mm models.
-Ceramic bezel is a toss up for me per my comments above.
-absolute tank and huge wrist presence
-prices on the 26400 have been dropping, so there are some deals out there

The one question I have is for those who own or have owned the 44mm version is does it get old? I have spoken to quite a few dealers I know, and one recurring theme they see if people get tired of the 44mm due to the size and weight. Secondly, does anyone see a price floor on the 26400 silver dial? These things seem to be in no mans land right now. Lastly does anyone see the 44mm going out of style? I feel it’s a polarizing design that may or may not have longevity in the collection.

I don't think the 44mm gets old. It is a very popular model and seems to be greatly preferred over the 42mm model by people who have the wrist to be able to pull off the size. Get 44mm if you can pull it off. The pushers alone are much nicer.

Have the 44s in both Rose Gold and Steel. By far my favorites, with the RG44 being the one watch I cannot imagine ever trading. If you like the way the 44 looks on you, buy it. You will never get tired of it.

I too have both the 44mm RG and 44mm panda...serious wrist presence and love the look!

As per above the 44mm are probably seen by most as the preferred option.

However some of the 42s are absolutely stunning and probably more wearable for many.

The Havana is a gorgeous reference too if the new CE bezel 42s don’t do it for you.

I loved the 42s but when the 44s came out they blew me away and pretty much became my ultimate sports watch. I had a Diver and then a ROC but finally got the 44 two years ago and I still love it. I have it in RG but find it easy to wear and I forget about it soon after it's on, and it has replaced my YG Sub as my worry free PM watch, and frankly wears as easy as my 42 SS, in fact it wears nicer as it is less top heavy and more balanced.

Style is a personal thing. So if you will always like it then no.

Ease of wear is a very big deal. So get what is most comfortable.

I started w a 42 panda and went to a 44 RG. In all honesty, it was a heavy watch which I couldn’t take on vacation without feeling it’s weight and becoming bothersome.

So I got this and totally love it.

Helluva shot. I owned the RG44 too at one point and you are correct about its weight, have sinced moved it and still enjoying the FC44.

If you have the wrist size for a 44mm, then it's a no brainer, IMO

I have read that the offshore line deeply offended Genta. I would dread to think what he would think of the 44mm version? The pusher housings are the most hideous barnacle on a behemoth of a watch, I have never thought this watch looked good on anyone that I have seen wearing it.

I am guessing you have never seen the watches he produced under his own brand.

Both 42mm and 44mm are too big in today's standards for a lot of guys.

Surprising view from an AP guy, if you are, the pushers are one of the most attractive and improved aspects of the 44, your view is well out of the mainstream.

Its true, story goes that when the first Offshore was displayed in Basel of 1993, Genta rushed into the AP booth and insisted, in front of the public, that they had ruined his beautiful design . But what do you know all these years later and its become one of the most sold models AP is offering and and icon in its own right.

But its all a matter of taste in the end of they day. And even though I would consider myself a 'purist' of sorts, and the ROO is not on the top of my list,
I still love the rugged pushers and sharp lines of the 44 Offshore.

I had an FC, so weight wasn’t an issue.

I prefer the pushers and stick markers on the 44mm.

Totally agree, Neil. In fact the sleek pusher housings and buttons on the 44 are one of the most attractive features and a strong reason why I bought mine. Its a design I'd never change.
