Gift from GF, what do you guys think?

Recently my girlfriend gave me a Shinola Runwell 41mm, I didn't know much about shinola until now. For obvious reasons I wont sell it, even tho it has been a pleasant surprise.

Just curious what TRF thinks of Shinola.

They are cool looking and have that built in the US of A feel. I'd own one.

I didn't know about them until last year. I was assigned as a bailiff and asked my judge about his watch one day. I couldn't figure out what it was. He is from Detroit and loved the hometown brand. Shinola makes all sorts of interesting things. They've recently teamed up with benchmade for an interesting gentlemens type knife.

It's not them who had problems as almost nothing is made in Detroit and courts have condemned them to change their marketing and the "made in Detroit"?

i grew up in Detroit and as much as I am a swiss/german watch guy-- i think they make a good and good looking product. I almost bought their first edition at the time of launch.

I think they look nice. I particularly like that dial (and the reverse white on black). It's a very cool story about someone trying to get a business going in the inner city. They seem to be doing well. I think I read that they were even thinking about re-opening an old hotel. I wish them the best.

Last I heard, dials and straps are made in Detroit. Case work/case backs as well as sapphire are Chinese. Swiss movement kits are built in Detroit.

I guess they could start case making, but to think they should be making watch movements (a thing not even Rolex does in full) in Detroit at this point is just silly.

They are as American made as any car built in the US. Parts come from all over.

Mixed opinions on Shinola around here. Nice to have a USA watch company but it's not clear they are actually made here. Personally they are not on my radar because I don't care for Arabic numeral dials and not much interested in quartz movements except for G-Shock. YMMV.

They have some attractive models, a few people I work with have purchased them. Despite the 'Made in Detroit' issues I do like their general story.

Here's mine. One of the original run. I have seen several in the wild and everyone seems to like theirs, as well as the Detroit connection. Not a Rolex but a fun casual watch. Enjoy!

Living in Detroit they are everywhere. I was supper impressed with them when they first came out and had limited runs. I just wish they would try and make them a little more horologicaly cool instead of so mass produced. I was really disappointed when I saw them start opening outlets. Either way they look great and it's a great gift.
