Jocke, love the tour, thanks for taking the time and effort to record this info. Of all the quartz movements I've seen over the years, Rolex seems to be the best constructed. Not a fact, just my opinion.

i have always tended to stay away from gold but i have a real hankering to land an 18k day date oyster quartz at some point, get a nice custom made croc strap for it, love the square case type almost like the IWC da vinci

I'm a proud owner of 3 SS/18K Oysterquartz watches I am a huge fan of the entire Oysterquartz line and feel they are way underrated and unappreciated.

The bold sharp lines of the case, the fluid lines of the very sturdy and beautiful integral bracelet, the amazing accuracy and durability of the supremely engineered Rolex quartz movement, and their overall scarcity all makes for a fantastic and very attractive watch IMO. By scarcity I mean I wouldn't be surprised if there were actually more V series Subs produced than the entire line of Oysterquartz watches in every metal and style from the late 70s all the way to 2001 or so!!

It's been my experience that finding a later model Oysterquartz (post 1995 or abouts) is actually quite difficult as the great majority I see offered seem to have been produced in the mid 80s with serial numbers ranging from 6XXXXXX to 8XXXXXX. Perhaps because they were not strong sellers in their time Rolex severely cut back on production sometime in the 80s to allow dealers to deplete whatever inventory was still in their channels and then produced them in far fewer quantities in the 90s?

I've also found the great majority of Oysterquartz models offered for sale do not have the original Oysterquartz box, papers, gold hangtag, booklets or anything else, and many of these items are actually collectors items in their own right.

Here is my latest find......a 1997-98 model in mint condition with all 13 links and a seldom seen white Roman dial and all the goodies:

I enjoy my 17013 and have an OQ DD on my short list. I've had a number of people ask me what kind of watch it is and they are surprised when they find it's a Rolex.

Actually, in my experience you can still find ones in pretty decent shape, but I agree with you 100% about finding ones still with with the original box and papers.

Update on OQ production year findings:

After searching Ebay and various dealer websites for over ten months now, I've concluded the later production OQ models from about 1997 and up are actually quite scarce as the great majority seem to have serial numbers corresponding with 1981 through 1986 production. Locating an OQ 17000, 17013 or 17014 with a serial number of U through P is quite difficult, and I've only seen two K models (2001-2002) offered in nearly the past year of intensive searching. I think K may have been the last production year as I've never seen a Y or newer offered for sale although they were listed in Rolex brochures up until 2003.

For me a Rolex has to have a sweep second hand. I remember back in the 80s when I was a kid I was fascinated with my moms Rolex and she said you can tell a real one by the sweeeping second hand. Even know that’s not the case I always want to see the second hand Roll on a Rolex. Not tick like the clock on my wall.

Examine a Rolex quartz if possible. Its nice to have something unique. Only 25k made in a 26 year run.

The case design is magic. The movement is solid. I love mechanical but this model is special.

Its actually good they divide opinions... keeps prices lower.

The datejust is nothing special. Spent a few weeks in Hong Kong this summer. Its almost as if everyone has a Rolex or two.
