Sold two Panerais and two Omegas. Nice watches, but no match for one SD43.
Save wisely and aggressively for retirement. I could've done more, but what I did is working out just fine.

I only have one debt, a mortgage for my second home, so I can save or set aside some money to buy what I like, but I only buy (whatever it is) when I have enough money to pay for it in cash.

I make small deals with cartels in shady areas of the world. It's quite a challenge to fund and keep my head through it all. Frankly I studied, went into engineering and have been working and saving all my life.

What I mean is that if you don't have the capacity to pay for it outright in cash - you shouldn't do it. Choosing to pay by credit card for the rewards is different from relying on credit card financing because you can't afford to pay for the thing outright.

I “loaned” myself the money from my savings and then changed my withholdings to direct deposit extra money back into the account so that in a year I had paid back the purchase price plus 5%. This was way more interest than I’d have earned if I had left the money in the account.
It helps, however, that my wife and I both have good jobs and no kids. |

Hard work provides a bit of disposable income. In my case each each watch is able to be sold for close to what they cost me or even a bit more.

just scored a bonus check and itching for a shiny new Sub no date.
but, alas taxes coming due, kid needs a new computer, the other one wants grad school, etc., stocks are down, paying down the mortgage is a priority. SUCKS being a semi-responsible adult. it's always nice to have something to look forward to. maybe Christmas? |

As others said, make sure the true needs are taken care of first.
Me personally, I max out my 401k, set aside some additional money in a taxable investment account every month, set aside some money for our 2 girls every month, pay the mortgage, etc. I then set aside a smaller amount of money each week in a savings account to save for a Rolex. Once I have the cash set aside, I’ll use a credit card to buy it for points/cash back and then pay in full. I have also implemented a new rule recently, that for every dollar I set aside for a Rolex, I have to set aside an equal amount into general savings or investment (in addition to the amounts mentioned above). I figure that it makes it easier to “justify” if I can say, yes, I’m spending a lot on a watch but I’m have set aside that same amount for savings/retirement/etc. I also try to restrict the higher dollar purchases to commemorate special events/milestones. I turn 38 tomorrow (3/2) and my next big purchase (which will actually be my first Rolex) is planned for my 40th birthday. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

First off, the average person can not afford to purchase a Rolex. That is the point.
Ok, getting rid of the word average. The top 25% of earners in the US could easily afford a Rolex if they prioritized it. But society does not encourage them to. I was putting more than a Rolex into my retirement right after college-but that is not normal priorities. I suspect more than a few use money that is outside their normal budget-bonuses, tax refunds, etc. money they set aside for fun. Then there is the top 5%, who don’t really have to prioritize much. When you make 30k a month and if you have a 10k a month lifestyle (back to that 25 percentile), you can buy toys occasionally without worrying about it. —— I don’t want to go into my specifics. I made a decent living when I was single and could buy nice stuff, but for the most part put it into savings. When I got married, my priorities shifted. An investment hit the jackpot and now I am retired. Monthly royalties are enough that I can afford a toy occasionally. |

i've been into watch since 2008 (age 28 that time).. and can only afford "shitter" brand like Tag with 24 months of 0% instalment from credit card... i always wants a rolex, but cannot justify the price as it keeps going up, and income in jakarta are very very low.. (min salary are around usd 260 USD/MONTHS) ... then finally 2017 ( 9 years later), my own business start to pick up, and i need a memorable watch for my wedding day.. so i finally pick up my first rolex subc date... its a tough journey (especially in the income of my country) to owned a rolex, .. very proud, and hopefully can get another Rolex in the future..

Just bought my first funded-by-me Rolex a few weeks ago. No gym membership, and I jog/walk to work whenever I can. No car and I only use Uber only a handful of time in the last four years. I set aside $5-$10 everyday. I fight off the temptations of designer bags and shoes. Everything after rent and living expenses go to savings and paying off student loans. I'm on track to payoff all loans this summer...

financing a Rolex without interest if paid within certain time frame to me is another way of owning this watch. It is not a stupid move but a smart one.

Don't smoke or drink but have a bad addiction for watches since I was a little kid. Ask the Egyptian's, you can't take it with you so enjoy it now.
I think everyone acquires their Rolex(s) through hard work am I missing something here?

I live a simple life and put little value on most material things, with the exception of watches.
I save, save, then save some more, and I use the savings to travel and buy a watch a year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

self supporting
Hi there, I set a goal to buy a Rolex Submariner for £10, to achieve this I buy and sell cool junk, Jewellery, some watches and all and anything that others discard as trash, four and half years later I have a 5513 Submariner, It was well worth the wait and now has me looking at my next purchase a 114270 Explorer, funded by the exact method's, I don't brag about this but if asked I explain, I will say If I wasn't doing this then I'd be working extra hours to finance my passion, can I ask how you fund yours? all the best "H"

Live modestly, small house payment, no car payments, no CC debt, no student loans. When I retired from my full time job, one of my co-workers adamently advised that I should take some of my deferred comp money and pay off my house. Why would I do that when it's earning 2X in interest more than my mortgage interest?? Plus, the mortgage interest is tax deductible!!! Found a supersweet deal on a like new Harley Soft Tail for the warden. Sold an extra car, and some unmentionables that were collecting dust in the back of the safe. Paid cash for the Harley. I buy cars and watches pre-owned.

My home, car, and business are mine, no kids. Then I can have a luxury item for me: My watch and always can flip my rolex for cash, is not so bad.
