Thanks guys.

By the way, I got some polywatch, forgot to take some before pictures but I'm very impressed with the product. The perspex has come up fantastic.

I haven't worn my Explorer since the 1680 came in to my possesion, I was even thinking of flipping it for an 16610 Anniversary!

I should get saving!

Very sorry to hear about your loss. It's terrible to lose a parent or both as in my case.

Enjoy that beautiful watch and remember your Dad every time you look at the face. Imagine his face reflecting on that plexi every time he would look at the time.

Regards,

H

I nipped into the AD to get the new spring bar fitted.

Once again the watch caused a bit of a stir with both customers and the Manager! He asked me if I knew how much it was worth, yes I replied, priceless!

Well that's weird. I thought I'd have look at this thread and it's exactly one year since the last post!

The watch has seen a lot of use over the last twelve months and every now and again someone knows what it is and we have a conversation about how it came into my possession.

Anyway, last week I went to wind it and the mechanism seemed to stop latching. So, twelve months after I originally planned, it's off for service.

Does anyone have any experience of William Rice in Hull?

Sorry to hear about your father. Thanks for sharing such a touching story. I'm sure you will think of your Dad every time you look at the watch, honestly, I can't think of a better gift he could have left you.

Guys, the OP revived the thread because he is asking for advice regarding a service.

OP, I would suggest you to start a new thread (assuming that the search function was of no help).

What a awe inspiring well written story. I think you summed up a lot of people's thoughts on watches and having them handed down and then in return doing the same. If only I could write down how I felt it that manner. Id be lying if I said reading your post didn't bring a tear to my eye thinking about my newborn son. I'm sorry for your loss

Graham, Just read your original post, so sorry to hear of your father's passing. You have to know that he is smiling down on you right now for taking such wonderful care of his treasured Submariner. May he RIP and may you have many more wonderful years and history made with your special heirloom. Please keep us all posted on the outcome with the service or whatever your dad's watch needs.

I am Sorry to hear your loss, please take care.

The watch is in such a pristine condition shows that it was in good hands and I believe it will be well taken care of in the future as well.

Thank you for sharing your story as once again it shows that a watch is more than a machine that tells time.

Thread resurrection.

I don’t post on here but check in every week or so to drool over some very nice watches!

The 1680 continues to grace my wrist and gets a few knowledgeable comments. It’s always nice to meet someone that knows what it is and get the chance to tell them the story behind the watch.

I had it serviced four years ago and it’s still keeping good time, so will leave it a couple of years before I do it again.

I wonder if someone could help me with some details. As far as I know, the face hands and insert are original. I bought a NOS strap a couple of years ago and kept the original.

Finally, could anyone tell me what version of dial it has?

Many thanks for any help.

Stories like this are why many of us love watches. A piece of time immemoriam. Every time you look at your wrist you can be remedied of so many fond memories of your father. I am lucky enough to still have my father with me and have similar stories and shared passion for watches. Taking over his collection when he dies will be probably the hardest part of sorting out affairs.

Remember him well and my sincerest condolences for your loss.

Beautiful watch and a truly touching story.

Great story! As for the dials/hands, can you post better, clearer photos, preferably with the hands set to about 9:15 to reveal all text on the dial? Would also help to post photo(s) without the Photobucket text on it.

To get a definitive answer, Can you post straight on pics with the hands clear of the writing on the dial? Also, with no photobucket writing... It resembles a Mark 2 but the crown is different

I believe it's a Mark II dial but yes better pictures would definitely help.

What an amazing story.

I read it and shed a tear - I too have a 1978 Sub 1680, also left to me by my Father. He passed away in June 2015, but before he died I got the watch caseback engraved with his and my Name/DOB. He loved it. He gave it to me a few months before he passed meaning I could get this work done (by Bill Rice) and got the chance to chat to him about it....

Mine is a Mk1 dial, with just a little patina, and I know what some feel about engraving watches, but this is never leaving the family. It wasn't new when my Dad had it, but it's been around about 20 years now!!

Enjoy your lovely watches, and remember your family every time you look at those timeless dials

So happy to read stories like this, your Dad had great taste. I have two watches from my Dad, one I wear on his birthday, and one I wear in Father's Day.
