Is 2020 A Great Year to be A Watch Enthusiast?

2020 has generally sucked because of the pandemic.

However, if you were to focus just on new watch releases, I think we have seen some amazing stuff this year, like:

- the new 41mm Submariner which is much better proportioned (even if we lost the coloured dials in SS and WG)
- the new OPs in different sizes and colours which should satisfy anyone’s tastes
- the Tudor BB58 Navy Blue
- the new Speedy 50th Snoopy
- the new Seiko Alpinists, Seiko “Willards” and Seiko 62MAS modern interpretations
- the new GS Soko special editions
- the Breiting 765AVI re-edition
- the Aquastar Deepstar re-edition

I’m sure I’ve missed many other new releases from the list, but the point is that there are some real choice if you have the funds to buy a new watch (unfortunately availability, especially with Rolex, is a big obstacle).

Every year is a great year to be a mechanical timepiece enthusiast. 20+ years and loving it!

I've had two weeks of furlough this year - followed immediately by mandatory overtime to get caught up - so during those two weeks I again got turned on to watches pretty good.

Prices for me have also been excellent, so yes! 2020 has been a great year to jump into mechanical timepieces.

All things considered, it is actually impressive how many exciting releases occurred this year.

Thanks everyone for their replies.

Obviously every year there is a lot of good product that comes out, but only a few releases tend to leave a lasting impression.

I think this year has been a bit of an outlier with such strong releases from many brands.

Does anyone have a favourite?

For me, the BB58 Navy Blue, the Aquastar Deepstar and the new Alpinists and the new modern versions of the 62MAS are stand outs. These are relatively affordable and offer good bang for your buck.

I'm a geek at heart, so the PAM1118 wins my heart visually. Mechanically, the new Seiko SS with Hi-Beat.

2020 has been good in the sense that the new release announcements from companies large and small have been evenly spread throughout the year, thereby avoiding the Rolex new releases consuming everyone’s attention during the normal Basel timeframe when everyone announced everything at once. Now we have the time to focus on each new release, enjoying them thoroughly and evaluating them fairly.

My favorite this year has to be the new Bulgari Octo with 100m water resistance. An everyday wear but really interesting design and sports watch that looks sharp. Can’t wait until mine arrives!

The 50’s was the best decade for watches, dress watches was out of this world and the Submariner and GMT was already on the scene. Slow decline since then.

as much as i say it's been annoying as heck getting mainstream stuff, it's pushed me to look at smaller independents and brands i would otherwise never have known about or considered.

Too much demand, not enough supply. Too much hype and FOMO and "investing". Harder to get what you want, even outlier brands.

Yeah it’s nuts. Even the micro brand stuff is selling out in minutes. But I have to say the Aquastar has so far blown me away

That’s super cool. Is the bracelet aftermarket?
