Has the dress watch genre changed over the last years?

Hello,

I was wondering what your opinions are on wearing a Rolex professional steel model in a dressy setting.

We all know James Bond gets away with it, but is it widely accepted...

I know that in certain area's of the world, this is considered a "faux pas" but has that mentality changed over the years?

Personally, I believe that my explorer II is a great compliment to any setting/outfit

I prefer classic styled dress watches in dressy situations. Strap, precious metal, smaller case size, romantic complications.

I think the tool watch at formal occasions just looks lazy and out of place. Sort of a Big Lebowski look I suppose.

I do think it looks good to wear dress pieces in casual settings though. T-shirt, shorts, flip flops and a PM dress watch is pretty cool combo.

I think people generally don’t care! There may be a few stalwarts that feel you should only wear a three hander on a strap not bracelet and it should be mid 30’s diameter.

In reality I think provided you’re not wearing a G-Shock people wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

Personally I wear my Explorer 1 as a dress watch if I need to dress formally. It makes sense being a three hander and isn’t colourful so works with all of my suits.

Among all Professional steel models, I think only Submariner & Daytona is alright to wear with Suits as it has long history and now it's accepted sort of everywhere. I don't think Explorer II, DeepSeas or others look right with the suit. But if anyone still wears it, I don't think anyone's gonna slap your wrist in an event!

Yea, nobody actually cares what watch anyone wears, ever. Just personal preferences.

I would be fine with MK1 version but not so much with MK2 version.

MK1 looks so much dressy whereas MK2 is full on sporty!

A dress watch is a dress watch. Leather strap. Simple dial. Thin. etc.

Can you wear a sports watch with a suit? Of course you can, I do it at times.

But I do believe a suit is best served by a full-on dress watch.

Cheers

Outside of yourself staring at your own watch, nobody is even going to notice or care that you are even wearing a watch in the first place, let alone what kind it is. Anyone who does notice is going to be one of us, so at that point just say hello and we can chat watches.

99% of the population is so focused on themselves not feeling out of place that after 5 minutes they won't even be thinking about you. Sorry, but that's just how human nature works. So with that in mind, where whatever the eff you want. It's your watch...

I'm waiting for someone to comment and bring up 100 year old fashion role. No wrist watch with suit or tux and only pocket watch is allowed!

Explorer 2 is very tool/sports. Of all Rolex watches it's probably the least dressy. but in the end it all comes down to what you like.

Sub, GMT or Daytona are probably the only sports watches I would pair with a suit.

If i had nice dress watches i'd prefer to wear a dress watch with a suit. But that's for me.

I don't really care what other ppl wear with their suit. Heck, most execs i seen with a suit wear an apple watch.

Thin, PM, leather strap and sub 40 please. You wouldn’t wear sneakers with a suit so why wear a sports watch?

Actually, since you brought it up - suits with sneakers. Once a forbidden combination is now becoming an in vogue interpretation of individual style - lots of celebrities are rocking this combo.

That said, I prefer some nice dress shoes with my suits ; )

I also agree that most anything works as long as the wearer feels comfortable and confident. And the venue allows for it. There’s a difference in dressing nice for work vs a wedding vs a m/a business meeting.

I have seen some very prominent gentleman in impeccable suits with 44mm watches on rubber and white sneakers. And it looked damn good. I don’t think it’s my style but I tip my hat.

If Bond and Prince William wear an Omega seamaster... I think you can get away with a Rolex sports watch.

Seriously though... who cares - if you hang around with someone that does I’d suggest binning them off.

Alex, your Explorer looks good with your attire. It’s not very dressy so perfectly fine.

For a three piece business suit it does not look appropriate.

Black Tie is out of the question. You might as well wear sneakers and a base ball cap with a tux, looks equally silly.
The host of a such an event appreciates tradition hence the invitation and to be respectful to the host the least you can do is to follow the correct etiquette or stay home.
Showing of ignorance doesn’t make you look good

A Rolex can be worn with anything, at any time. I wear any of my Rolexes with a black tie.
When you have style, you do not have to ask yourself that sort of question.

In my opinion, they does not fit. In nowdays everything goes, but overall, I think its safety play with the classic rules. When you know and handle them well, then you may break them a little bit.

I tried it for a number of years with 5 digit the EXP II but it didn't sit well with me.
Now I don't wear a classic style of Rolex in a "dress setting" nor do I consider them to be suitable.
My GS sbgw-253 fits the bill precisely

I agree for the business watch roll, but not really a well defined dress watch, though I believe it could cross over

As long as you don't wear an Apple watch.

Mechanical watches are the new dress watches.

What makes a dress watch a dress watch is very subjective. Typically it's a simple dial, leather strap, slim profile. There are watches that really are sport watches that people have sort of accepted as dress watches such as the Day Date and Datejust. Then there are obviously watches that are clearly sport watches. These watches can come on any bracelet or strap, but typically have a bezel complication such as a dive watch or GMT. It fair to say that wearing the nicest watch you own makes it "your" dress watch even if it's not truly a dress watch.

My first two nice watches were a Submariner Date and a Navitimer. I wore them with pretty much anything. I have a much larger collection now and probably wouldn't wear most of my watches as "dress" watches any longer because I have that luxury now. Right now, my two dressiest watches are my Portugeiser Automatic and my Datejust. Both probably don't meet the strictest definition of a dress watch, but I don't think anyone would blink seeing either with a suit or even a tux.

I get what you're saying, but how many here regularly are in a formal setting? Here in NM I only wear a suit and tie for weddings and funerals.
