Rolex has always been luxury and nothing but.
In the old days there was not a single blue collar laborer able to afford one.
Owning a watch was already special. Even nowadays it will be a bridge too far for the vast majority of employees to buy any Rolex.

Did you know that DateJust with a fluted bezel is already around since 1940’s and this type of dressier bezel since 1920’s. Fluted bezel goes hand in hand with a luxury watch made to be jewelry.

The Rolex marketing department created this tool watch image which of course is a load of rubbish. We all can identify with the tough guys and that makes us feel good. Should Rolex depend on a few pro divers or pilots for their business they can close up shop very quickly.
It works, also with me, own a Sub and a DSSD and don’t like swimming.

Btw the new iterations of Rolex models are much more rugged and suitable for the elements compared to the older ones. Shock and magnetic resistance has improved. Depth rating increased. Corrosion resistance for the SS watches and accuracy has improved.
Combine this with the sapphire crystal and ceramic bezel and you end up with a very nice piece of jewelry.
I think you should read my statement a little more carefully. Rolex was certainly less luxury even 10-15 years ago. Not saying it wasn’t luxury at all, just less...

Also, I believe the watch itself is just as capable now as they’ve every been (save for additional rather unnecessary water resistance and a few other perks), BUT THE BUYERS ARE NOT. Again, I am really struggling to understand why/how a bunch of grown men (and women despite being the small minority in this gripe session) worry about scratching a watch. The comments along the lines of “not being able to deal” with a certain level of scratching is just insane to me, which is why I asked to better understand what I obviously cannot.

Watches are meant to be worn, and scratches are inevitable. If that is something that someone cannot deal with then perhaps try to “flex” in other, more advantageous ways, or go see a counselor 😃

+1 on this, but it still hurts when you see that first one.

I remember when Paul Newman got his first scratch. He immediately whined about it to those around him and then looked for a place on the Internet to whine some more; alas, blogs did not yet exist for people who somehow think—being unaware of more serious problems in their lives—posting nonsense about nothing is the right way to move through life, and he never really recovered from the anguish of not being able to have a cry as he saw so fit (rightly or wrongly, you know, not judging). Ffs

Also, was your watch a good investment?????

I think you’re ok. Scratches are no fun, but it’s a gold clasp and it’s going to get many many more.
Shake it off and enjoy it!

That’s a good prescription, Doctor!

This! It´s annoying, but like the first dent on a brand new car or spill of red wine on a new carpet you just have to live with it...many more scratches to come!

Exactly, in the old days there were no gold Subs with PCLs, which is somewhat of an oxymoron. YMMV

Options? Ok, here's one, stop living your life and just sit still on the couch from here on. Have all your food delivered, wear long sleeves everyday, even if you're warm, and never leave your house again.

This is such an amusing thread. Everyone is responding to a "scratch" that no one can see, including myself...lol!

It bothers you just as it would all those telling you to ignore it. Just fix it or replace the part. It is devastating to you so spend the money to eliminate the emotional drain

Let it be. Doing little touch ups here and there can be a slippery slope.
