Mickey Mantle’s 1964 ALCS 6238 pre-Daytona

(If this is not permitted, please delete? I messaged our mod asking, but no answer yet. Just in case, I’m not including a link. No connection to seller or otherwise, just thought it’d be of interest.)

Mickey Mantle’s 1964 ALCS Cosmograph 6238 is coming up for auction at Heritage next month, estimate only says “$40,000 - up.” Pretty nice case back inscription and provenance (bought from Mickey Mantle, Jr.).

That will be great to watch. Wealthy New Yorker's will run that bid up incredibly high! He was a hero to many.

Yep. This one should catch a good bid from the wealthy NYC watch collectors who also happen to be Yankees fans, of which I’m sure there are plenty.

The auction houses do those low estimates like that on purpose. They want people to think its obtainable for that opening price in order to get people signed up for the auction and to get bids.
The thing this watch has going for it is the collectors cross over between watch collectors and baseball collectors. I am going to guess it will do at least a half mil.

Hey, it's "The Mick." There are people who would buy it exactly because it has the "cheese."

This is where baseball memorabilia, watch collecting, and an American icon meet. How many crazy wealthy watch collectors who love baseball memorabilia and are from NY (and a certain generation) are there in this world? Well, at least two...should be interesting!

My guess is it hammers for 175k; as stated someone will pay a mint for this.

How much does a pre-daytona go for without such a provenance? Like 50k? I'm betting around 100-150. I would be surprised if it went higher, 6238 isn't exactly a big crown submariner or paul newman. I also can't imagine a baseball fanatic would pay that much of a premium but who knows.

I don't get the dirt on older watches. The only thing you need to do, is rinse it every few weeks (or months) and it stays pristine. Seems like the watch never saw any water whatsoever.

You could look at it as a good thing to buy one like that too. That kind of greasy crud is actually a good water repellent round the crown and pushers plus it maybe shows it’s not something someone has just knocked up or put together.

It’d be satisfying to strip & clean if you bought it too.

Interesting to see. It should go for a lot more than that.

I wonder if the are promoting to NYY fans through social media etc?

Some of these pieces with provenance hit a peak in value, and then decline as the connection to the celebrity gradually decreases with time. Mantle was a huge star in his day and he was idolized by my father's generation, but nowadays, more people might prefer to have a watch owned by a star from the 1970s or 1980s.

This is very cool. (I actually have an identical 6238).

Dial appears to be original and that can be confirmed if serial number is in the 1 million range, as “mile” unit measurement was used on the dials in that range. Hands appear to be original. Sub seconds dial at 9 should have a thinner hand and it does. This is good as it is often replaced with the incorrect hand.

Bracelet is incorrect though (should be rivet style), but that’s not too surprising and easily corrected. Would be nice to see a photo of him wearing it for the sake of provenance.

Also, I’m wondering why he got this. Was one given to each member of the team? Or did he purchase it himself and have it engraved.

It’s a rare watch. It’s been estimated that only around 1,000 6238s were made, so I’d be surprised if everyone on the team got one.

descartes, serial indeed is 1007718, and accrording to the auction copy, they were issued to all Yankees as ALCS winners. Of course, rosters were smaller then.

I see that now. Also, Al Downing’s 1964 ALCS watch was auctioned off by Christie’s in 2011. It was the same inscription as Mantle’s and is very close in serial number. I wonder how many more are out there.

I guess the 6238 should be known as the “Yankees’ Watch.”

I wonder if the Mick even wore it much. Mantle stuck me as a guy who would want a 2-tone or YG datejust / day-date.
