Which dress watch?
Looking for something in rose gold. Which would you get?
Patek 5119R Or Vacheron Patrimony Traditionelle Small Seconds. Both are manual wind, three handers. |

VC, not even close
I'm desperately wanting a Calatrava revamp from PP with a larger movement (and perhaps a slight 1mm upsize across the line). Also a see through caseback on the 5196. If that happens, my answer would be different. |

Either one is a great choice — but I think in this case I’d go with the VC.

Tough call, but I’d go Patek. The hobnail bezel is classic

VC Pat is very nice, as is the Saxonia, think the PP looks a bit dated for me now.

Between these 2, I will choose the 5119R. I like the classic hobnail bezel and the lacquered dial:

VC reboots their entire lineup every 3 years it seems, buy accordingly.

The patek is more classic. VC is more modern/versatile and can be worn with more casual attire. I love the vc personally and it has been on my short list for a while.
VC movement more appropriate for its case size, if that matters to you. |

The Patek 5119R, with the hobnail bezel, is a classic Patek dress watch. I saw one on the wrist of a Patek Salon employee and it looked quite elegant. If you are considering the 5119R, I would recommend that you look at the 5116R for a couple thousand $/€/£ more. They are made in smaller numbers because of the enamel dial. It has been discontinued so a little harder to find, but they are still available pre-owned.

I have both, except I have the J version of the Patek and I prefer the Vacheron overall, especially for the price. The Patek movement is just too small for the case. Still, there's nothing quite like the hobnail bezel and lacquerd dial with Roman numerals and leaf hands. For practical reasons, I do wish the Patek had mini dot minute markers. Some might argue the 5119 is a bit dated and I can't totally disagree but then again the Nautilus and Aquanaut look terribly dated to me and not classic like the 5119.
If you do decide to go for the Patek, you might as well go for the now discontinued 5116R. |

5116R Enamel would be the winner. As for VC I cant help but find it laughable that they need a company like Hodinkee to assist in selling their watches since there is little to no demand for their pieces. Sorry to be so harsh.

Just because they're not popular doesn't mean they're not great watches. Just look at Lange: they languish in display cases but they make superior watches to Patek for far less money.
