AD experience today

I had some time to kill so I stopped by a local AD to discuss Rolexes and to look for a gift for my wife. The discussion was disheartening. She put me on a list for a Rolex I desire...I’m some outrageous number, 65 I believe. She blatantly told me I could move up on the list if I wanted to purchase 4-5 other Rolex watches or spend a substantial amount of money on other jewelry.

A. I am not interested in spending uncanny amounts of money to collect unnecessary jewelry just so I can move higher on a list to buy a watch that already costs 10k. If I wanted it that badly I would purchase the watch from a gray dealer at a 6k premium versus spend 50k on items I don’t need nor want.

B. I don’t need a new Rolex that badly. It’s just a watch.

This experience has given me new perspective on just how ridiculous this game has become. I was going to purchase a relatively small gift for my wife but I’m certainly not giving that store my money.

I’m on one other list for the Rolex I want and if my name gets called, great, and if not, no worries. I have plenty of other ways to spend 10k.

I've been hearing more stories like this from people complaining how AD's treat them. Sounds pretty cruddy.

Hey. On the bright side, she is honest. We all know the game. Most stores do this but some pretend they don't.

I was looking at a YG Daytona and inquired about an SD42. I was told there were no SD42s available, but [told in so many words] one would come available if I purchased the YG Daytona.

I understand (especially where this AD is located - high income/high traffic) that special items need to go to VIPs (which I'm not) or along with another big purchase.

AD experience today

I heard this quote many times “You have to pay in order to play.” So sorry to hear that disheartening remark from that AD. Time has a way of not just healing hurt feeling but also on correcting “excesses” of current times.

You did right with your thought about watches. These can be substituted but not your integrity and correct rules of the game that you wish to play.

I can only imagine that the SF Bay Area is an extremely difficult market to acquire a SS Rolex at retail.

I bet there are more billionaires here than number of SS BLRO allocated. Sorry but you have almost _no_ chance competing with these guys for a highly desirable watch.

On the other hand Rolex isn't the only game in town, there're many other watches to be loved, seriously.

True but when there are several million others in the queue do Rolex care?

It is, and I feel for my AD. They want to sell. They don’t like saying “no.” Selling watches people want is their business and they just can’t get enough inventory to meet demand. It’s too bad for the ADs and for customers.

Sounds like you are after a BLRO. Unfortunately, that is one of the most difficult watches to obtain these days.

Yes, it is a BLRO and I certainly understand the demand. I own other Rolex watches. It isn’t the fact that the BLRO is incredibly hard to come by, it is just way the AD attempted to suck more money out of me so I could rise up the list.

Wow 65 on the list for the BLRO, that's like 5 years or some crap like that.

Someday...

In a universe far, far away, I like to imagine the conversation might sound different... "OK I'll take the SeaDweller off your hands, but only if you also have a Hulk and a Daytona for purchase too, otherwise no deal...."

I haven’t been affected as I bought before the drought, but these stories are all too common and very frustrating to hear. So much negativity being built up by the Rolex network. I can’t wait to see what happens when this recent Rolex bubble finally bursts and all these speculators get taken down a peg. I for one will be expecting some major groveling by the ADs if they want my business again. And For the greys ... major major hardball discounting. Judgment day will come for them all and it will be a reckoning! Happy Halloween!

Shop around. Call around. Ask around. Give your business to an AD who does not utilize questionable sale tactics.
