5905p is PERFECT for everything. Just get an alternative strap for casual. It works for everything and while it's expensive, does't cost both arms and legs.

I really love the 5905p but it's not a good fit really for dress as it's so thick and I like large and thick watches.

Spend a bit more and go 5970J. Least produced and 5970's will hold and more than likely continue to increase in value over time. Don't buy a modern production Patek like a 5170 or 5905 unless you want to get killed in resale.

Advice Needed - Best Patek Dress Watch that Wears Casually
Quote:
The 5970j overall probably will be a safer purchase than a modern Patek, such as the ones mentioned above and the 5270r that the OP is considering, but it has to be the one you want. A few points: Since it's discontinued, you very likely won't find a 5970 where you can have your name on the papers, if that is important to you. When comparing the 5970 to its successor, the 5270 offers the in-house movement. Now the collectors will want the Lemania, but I like the in-house movement better (it is absolutely stunning!), and I also like the dial of the 5270 more as well. I prefer the day/night indicator and the leap year indicator - their layout offers more legible sub dials than the 5970. Purists will argue the sub dials sit below the equator, which is a distraction. You'll have to decide if this is a big deal to you. All things considered, it was not, to me. At the end of the day, if you plan to wear it, which I assume you will, buy the one that fits you and sings to you. When I bought mine, I had a choice between the two references. I chose the 5270 over a like-new (I think it was in a safe for its life) open papers 5970r. Investment wise, if I sell the 5270, I would lose more than if I had chosen the 5970, but if I don't, then it's a moot point. The good news, if you buy a 5270r, I think you can get one at a good price, which will protect you on the downside if you decide to sell. Here's a great picture of the 5270r from the interweb, borrowed from Monochrome. I think it shows the beauty of it perfectly. --- F.O.G.

Though 5270r is singing a much more mellifluous song, just have to save up. As is said over and over on TRF, if you buy right you won't get beatup too bad on the "flip" side (pun intended...). |

Good price. I was offered $60 last month. Preowned late 50's so downside limited.

Or buy a modern patek cause they look hot and wear the f@&k out of it and enjoy it and not worry about the resale.

"3) Ideally a watch that will not tank on the secondary market." Hence a 5970. I had numerous friends buy the original 5270G 1st series back in 2011 and have ended up getting crushed on resale. Although if you buy one right now (100k or less) he should be okay. |

Saw a couple watches on my list tonight.
5270r in a bag, 2017-07-20_23-42-21.jpg and 5170r on my wrist. 5170r.jpg And the back which is VERY SIMILAR to 5270 from the back because they share the same Chrono... 5170r-back.jpg Also saw a 5146r but not for me. Platinum would be better, but just not my style. Not surprisingly I like the 5270r the best even in plastic, but the 5170r is quite something to behold. They had the 5170g in a box, but with plastic it was not worth taking pictures. AD as expected lousy pricing... $145,000 for 5270r (lowest they would go). $70K for 5170r... Again lowest they would go, even cash. As much as I want to build my Patek resume, these ADs are just making me want to stay grey. Interestingly the 5164 on the 5650 navy tropical strap almost stole the show... Ok no it didn't but it looks REALLY great on Navy which I guess is hard to get unless you have connections 2017-07-20_23-47-24.jpg Tomorrow I am going to see the 5170g along with 5905p |

Advice Needed - Best Patek Dress Watch that Wears Casually

What a great day. The best way to make a sound decision is to see them in the metal and ideally try them on. Keep doing your due diligence, and eventually you'll know. If it means saving longer, it's worth it.

Another day of trials tomorrow... I would like to track down a preowned 5270r or out of box 5270r to try on. I know from experience, PP plastic masks the beauty of the watch somewhat. I remember looking at the 5711 blue in plastic and thinking, this is not that special... They they took it out and I was like WOW... The finishing and dial were really subdued when viewing wrapped up. |

When I was searching for a PC, I tried on the 5270r a few times and it didn't sing to me. Too busy. I then found a 5970 locally , tried it on and was in love. It took awhile to find a well priced mint one.
Many dealers I spoke with are wary of buying 5270's as they can't sell them as they take bath on resale. The 5970 is a different story. And I wear it casually with shorts etc etc. :) |

I don't think the 5270r is too busy, but I am aware of the hit on resale. Which is why I would not get it at an AD. I am especially fond of the 5970p though hard to find less than $190K. A can only imagine the value will keep going up with time. |

The pic I took doesn't do justice, the color of the strap was this... Though 5164a watch... It looked really sharp. Kinda liked it better than the original strap. patek-navy.jpg |
