PP 5004P or 5204P
So I've been thinking a lot about which one of these to get with in next year. Love 5970P and 5270G blue dial, but wanting something more complicated and more unique. Any thoughts?
Also was just approved for 5131R and can't wait till I get one. Watches: 5711/1a blue, 5712/1a, Rolex D blue, GMT BLNR, Sub Hulk, Daytona Ceramic black dial, Tudor Ranger |

Size matters
I love the 5004 for its symmetrical stunning dial. But it is thick for a 36.7mm watch. You need to try it on the wrist to see if it works for you. The 5204 is a more modern size but the dial aesthetics are different--matter of personal taste. FWIW they won't be making any more 5004 so the market is a known entity. You don't yet know how many 5204 will end up being made. Best of luck with your decision.

I wish I had this problem! But both pieces are beautiful. I do like the 5204 for the modern size, but you cant go wrong with either!

5204 for the modern size. They still allocate 5131R's? Thought that boat had sailed...

I am entranced these days with the perpetual chrono's...and I had close to the same conversation going on in my head.
Recently, I went with the 5204p as a "wear often" watch as the 36mm height of the 5004 seemed almost (dare I say) ill proportioned as wear often watch. Maybe I would have gotten used to it...but when I tried on the 5004 it seemed to slide around the top of my wrist. The 5204p is fantastic and I have hardly taken it off, really enjoying it. I do find it fascinating the stark difference in case size and dial color between the 5004, 5204p and the 5370p. I am still looking to acquire a 5004 WG (due to believed rarity) maybe this week in NY for vertical collection of the split chrono's... From what I have seen this year, the great news is the prices are stable (not going up on you) and plenty of past buyers of the 5004 kept them at least single sealed. So you have time, choices and clean product readily available. Hope this helps. |

Where is the market at these days on the 5204P (black dial). Are they difficult to obtain? Pricing?

Both the 5204 and the 5004 will have their place in the history of Patek Philippe's PC split second chronos.
As others have mentioned, the 5204 has better proportions with the case diameter and thickness. It is slightly thicker than the 5270 and still very wearable. The 29-535 movement used in the 5204 was completely designed and manufactured in-house. It is a superb watch. The 5004 has been discontinued for some time and is a collector's dream watch. I believe the 5004P came in a few dial variants. The 36mm case diameter is a bit small, but back during the watch's production years, it was not considered small at that time. Many people love the Lemania-based 27-70 movement, although IMO the 29-535 is a better movement. However the 5004 is a watch to buy and keep in the safe. For wearability, the 5204 is the one to get. For collectibility, the 5004 has the edge. |

5204 first generation but I'm biased as I own it. 5004 proportions are not my cup of tea.

FWIW the 5004 has had issues and is fairly fragile. I think the better way to go is the 5204. I say this even though the 5004 dial has way more pop than the 5204 which is somewhat bland by comparison.

Many watchmakers and watch specialists say that the split-second chronograph is the most complicated complication. If you want to wear this complication I would definitely and always give preference to the improved and more reliable movement. When we talk about Lemania-based movements my preferences are the more simply 5070 and 5970... Whereas the 5004 has a classic look, the 5204 looks much more sporty. In particular I love the hour markers with luminescent coating. There is so much lume on the dial. This is quite unique for a Patek Grand Complication. I have never seen a comparable Grand Complication in this respect... This certainly one, but for sure not the only reason why I decided to go for a 5204 and not for example for a more classic designed blue dial 5270g-019, which I like also a lot. |
