That is interesting, thank you for the tip

It's a robust piece, it's been to a few festivals, dozen holidays, swam several times in the sea (rinsed afterwards) and it's ageing well as a daily.

Do any of you owners think the Explorer will have a movement update next year if and when the Exp II get's an update? I'm kind of holding off just in case, would appreciate any input.

I know y'all going to say the 31 series movement is awesome and i'm sure it is but do you think the model will see a movement upgrade next year?

I think it's very likely they would update the Explorer's movement and completely phase out production of any 31xx series. They'd still maintain the machining and components to allow for servicing of any watches that have the 31 series, but I think any new releases will probably uniformly adopt 32xx movements.

My advice would be to strongly consider the 214270 as it is, because the current size, fit, and feel of this watch is perfection. An update down the road might push this into the 41mm size, which I find a little too big. A more interesting update would be to offer a 36 mm variant once more, and that is something I would really love to see.

Hey man thanks for feedback. IMO there is no chance of a 41mm Explorer, just zero chance, A 36mm is a possibility I wouldn't rule out.

Yes I absolutely love the current 39mm variant, I agree it is perfection. I know they will update the movement eventually. I was just thinking I would hang on until next year if the movement change would happen next year in line with the Exp II update? I know no-one knows for sure but wondering what the general conscientious is?

If it would be 2022 or after then I can't wait that long and I'll just get the current 31 series.

I'm just hoping nothing will change other than the movement then I will hang on until 2021. If the movement is still a little while away I won't/can't wait anyway.

If I wait and the size changes to 36mm or 41mm I will be utterly devastated.

If you like the current version then get it. It will hold its value and certainly wouldn’t drop by much as it’s a Rolex. If they do come out with a version you prefer down the line, then upgrade. You would get most of your money back towards it and can enjoy it right now. Life is for living, go for it

If you haven’t already, I’d jump on a waiting list for a 214270. That way you have a plan B in case the Explorer doesn’t get a movement upgrade. Also worth considering how COVID-19 might impact Rolex production again, possibly both this year and next year.

Yeah thank you. I prefer the current version, I don't want them to touch it. I just didn't want to buy and then sell so soon if the movement upgrade is imminent. There is a few other (non Rolex) pieces i'm after what I can pick up between now and then so i'm happy to wait a little while if the movement upgrade is on the cards.

My AD has told me he can get me one before xmas if I want one so i need to make my mind up.

Yeah I think i will, just can't decide what to do for the best. Spend the money I have set aside for the Explorer on another piece and enjoy something else in the interim or pick up a current reference and take a chance the movement will change with the next releases which could be as early as next Summer.

I'm from Northumberland too btw

Yeah, I have a good relationship with them too, I think I could probably get an Explorer pretty soon if I asked for one. I'm on first name terms with almost all of the staff including the GM. I'm in there permanently either shopping or browsing haha

I’m happy with mine but I'd definitely jump on one if they return to a 36mm version.

I always think with cars you are best to go with the last of an outgoing model where all of the flaws have been ironed out. I have applied this rational to my Explorer39mm Mark 2. I wear it everyday, so don’t need a 70 hour power reserve. If you love the look of the watch and it’s proportions etc buy one now in case they bring out a replacement which you don’t like.

I love the Explorer and am currently on the hunt for one. If anybody sees an Explorer at an AD in the U.S., please give me a heads up with a pm. I’m down to drive anywhere. Really appreciate it!
