How much are import fees when buying a watch from Japan?

On like a $5k watch….I’ve heard around 3 percent, is this accurate?

For comparisons: My last purchased on Chrono24 was over $15k and was steel. The shipment details listed it as a “PRECISION INSTRUMENT” but coded under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule as follows:

HTS Code: 9102.21.9010 - Movements For Wrist Watches, Not Battery Powered, Base Metal Case, With Automatic Winding, Having Over 17 Jewels, Others

The charges via DHL were as follows:

MERCHANDISE PROCESSING 50.00
IMPORT EXPORT DUTIES 95.00
ADVANCE PAYMENT 17.00
Please Pay This Amount in USD 162.00

(I rounded them a tiny bit.)

YMMV, you pays your money, you takes your chances

$800 exemption……3% import tax on the first $1000. beyond the $800 exemption.
They charge 6.5% on any amount above the first grand.
PS if you have used the $800 on something else….you’ll be charged $290 on a $5000 watch.
There may also be a handling charge for customs clearing by shipper.

Full out a watch worksheet with the highest value on “movement”. There are 3 categories:
1) movement
2) case
3) bracelet

I broke down a $15k watch in $13.5 movement, $1250 case, $250 strap and paid $130 for the shipment

The previous 2 posts contradict each other.....one paid $130 for a $15k watch and one paid $290 for a $5k watch.

In other words, no one really knows. Point is.....YMMV is what it sounds like it comes down to.

Agreed and I sometimes wonder why I try to help and answer these questions.

Im not sure about US CBS but we have a have a simple process to calculate incoming duty and tax on basically anything:

https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-v...t-cal-eng.html

Note: you declare where the watch is made not where it is shipping from.
