I don't think there is a single 'wrong' Porsche. I have owned several, and always looking to get back into one. Some (many) have gotten out of reach for me to get into - but there is ALWAYS a porsche for every budget.

They each have distinct personalities, pluses and minuses. The 996 turbo is a great example. So is a 997. Many subtleties are up to the individual owner, and many times you don't realize what you love and don't love until you actually own the car.

They hold value, and resell just as easy. I have broke even or made money on all the Porsches I owned. So go ahead and splurge for the 996. Or the 997. It really doesn't matter - all that matters is that you enjoy the way the car looks and drives (and will fit your lifestyle), have done a bit of homework on the car and maintenance, and not getting in over your head.

I recently had a conversation with a friend on what is our absolute #1 most favorite car brand - and after much thinking and deliberation - PORSCHE came in at #1 for both of us. They figured out the automotive world very well. Audi is #2 for me.

GOOD LUCK!

I have owned 2 of them. Currently I own a 2004 996 TTX50z. It is intoxicating.

I love the old school response.

By the way, regarding the interior. I prefer it over the 997. Change out the stereo for the new Porsche classic stereo with CarPlay and you have an up to date system that is more relevant than a 991 model.

Great car by itself, not the most liked of the 911 turbos. The main issue is the headlights, but of all the 911 turbos it is by far the best value.

I personally love the headlight. As a matter of fact, even love the MK1:
