Opinions on the 50505 Cellini
Looking for feedback on the 50505 Cellini. My collection is primarily focused on sport watches, but I am exploring a yellow or rose gold dress watch. The Patek 6119r is top of my list, but tough to buy through an AD and nearly 3 times the price of the 50505 which can be purchased for around 13k on the secondary market gently used. Thanks in advance!

I have been thinking about a dress watch as well. I feel I would regret not getting the Patek 6119R for a 50505. Aesthetically they look similar but who doesn't want a Patek to round off the collection.

I can appreciate it but don’t desire it.

I love everything except the markers extending inside the minutes track
That really bugs me

Good point. That is something to consider. A bit of an oddity with the 50505 for sure.

It is a decent watch but too expensive for the money.
Cellini has been sort of a stepchild in the family. Most of my collection is dress watches and I have not been able to warm up to Cellini because of one issue - price. For $13-15K there are better dress watches out there. Lange Ultra Thin, Vacheron, JLC (all pre-loved). They'll give you the same dress feeling with a much higher pedigree. Cellini would be a great option in steel.

It’s a beautiful watch, although I do feel there are nice dress watches for the money, JLC make some beauties.

What Patek do you now have? Do you feel like the Patek is a clear winner over your prior Cellini?

Definitely no on the Cellini. The PP 6119R is impeccable, can’t go wrong there. I’d also look at Lange, Vacheron, and possibly Breguet and Glashutte Orginal for dress watches you might like. At the price point (or below) of the 6119, I would get a VC Traditionnelle small seconds or a Lange Saxonia big date. First choice would be the PP, though, and it should be doable at an AD with a bit of a wait.

Not a fan. I would look at GS who's finishing meets Patek or look at JLC for a dress watch.

For this style of dress watch I can think of a bunch of nicer brands to be honest. Not exactly pretty and the brandname Rolex is more a burden and I would only buy a Rolex for stuff others don’t do quite as well.
For this style I’d always go with a JLC, Blancpain, Breguet or obviously the much more fancy Swiss brands if money allows or if this is a priority (I personally am not a fan of any of the suggestions that some make regarding watches from East Germany…) |

The Patek 6119 is really nice, no doubt, it's on my hit list as well. But at 13k, the Rolex 50505 is hard to beat. Or, going further up the chain, the Rolex Moonphase 50535 is something truly special - and still less than the Patek 6119 - plus date, moonphase and automatic movement.
Don't get me wrong, I own several Pateks, they are all nice, and I'll likely end up getting a 6119 at some point. But in terms of value for the money, the most recent Cellini's are undeniably great. The 6119 is 2.5x the price. That's a big delta to take into consideration. In the end, my advice is this: buy the watch that impresses you, not those around you. |

I love the Rolex Cellini - Time, and as others have said, a real value at that price point, especially when compared to comparable other choices costing 2x-3x.
On my radar for purchase … Rolex Cellini Time PP Calatrava 6119R ALS 1815 Breguet Classique 5177 The Breguet maybe in the lead, because it is the only one offered in Yellow Gold … but in the end I will likely own a couple off my list. Any would be a great addition to any collection. |
