Took these to dinner with friends tonight. Unfortunately the 1985 Rutherford was bad. Hung onto it to long.

I hate it when that happens. It's such a fine line, too, between hitting its peak and then crossing over that threshold. That Rutherford would have been fantastic at its peak. I still have 10 bottles left of a case of 1990 Chateau Talbot Bordeaux in my cellar that I bought back in 1995. The last one I opened was amazing but now I am concerned that I might be trying my luck. I should probably start drinking them up this summer with steaks on the grill!

We will be having this shortly with beef short ribs. Just decanted it and am letting it breathe a bit before we pour.

The problem with that age is unless you are the original owner and have always kept its climate at the correct temperature then its hard to know its previous life. I always store cork down to keep the cork wet and fat and in constant 62 degrees for reds and 34 degrees for whites.

What about it was bad? Or do you just not like the tawney/nutiness flavors of a +20 year old wine?

A couple of decades ago I had a small collection of Penfolds Grange Hermitage, generally regarded as Australia's best red wine and comparable to the best produced anywhere.
Properly cellared, these wines will be drinking well at 50 years. My cellaring was somewhat indifferent and I drank most of them at 25 years to ensure they were "in the window".
I kept a few to 30 years and two of six were vinegar. I sold the remaining ones for almost 20 times what I paid for them. Hopefully great wines have great corks but 40 years is a big ask for a cork and anything over 20 years needs a regular cork-check.

The reds line up for this trip to Mammoth. Have a few Chardonnay and Champaign bottles too. Jazz and Wine Festival this weekend.

This was solid, as usual. It aged wonderfully. We bought a few of these at the winery in 2009 and every one has been great.

That's a monster right there, they don't even make a straight cab release anymore other than One Point Five & HSS. I bet it was a screamer!! Good vintage too!!
