Could that be the "time recorder rim-acts as a stop watch" the card it came with mentions ?

What do the paper and certified state about this watch? You should feel concern who gifted this to you as it does not look good at all. Sorry to disappoint you.

The watch rate certificate has the ref 6541 and s/412XXX NOV 1959

It has been in my family since the original purchase with receipt and was gifted to me after a life achievement

Should have read “haven’t seen that bezel though”

Not sure what happened there

I don’t believe it would act as a stopwatch function; more likely to be able to track another time zone on the same continent.

May be able to help better once your other pictures are cleared by a Mod (the paperwork/booklet/instructions).

Exactly. All the writings don't match when compared with original examples and the lume plots are very small. Maybe it's just a refinished dial.

Anyone ever seen a dial or bezel like that? It looks nothing at all like the non-waffle 6541 dials. My guess is a refinished or aftermarket dial, and as for the bezel...no idea.

Looks like a badly redone 6541 Milgauss with some odd parts. Case (including papers), hands and bracelet is worth a lot of money.

Serial matches what it is supposed to be.

It was worn daily by the original purchaser till they passed, then it was serviced (new tube, gasket and "the face refinished with the same original color")

No, that referred to this bezel, which is the correct style for the 6541 and can be used as a rudimentary timer.

still digging up info about it, but i learned the insert was damaged and replaced with with current one from a different rolex i believe.

Would it be worth getting an authentic bezel/insert put on it now?

You’ll not find one. And if you do it is a five digit part. These super rare watches are 2-300k+ in good original condition. Yours is still valuable but the missing bezel insert and redone dial kills the value a lot. Either try to sell it or just enjoy keeping it as is. You will not be able to restore it.

Certainly it's up to you.

Most of the value in early watches is in originality of the parts. With a refinished dial and later bezel, much of it's market value would be lost. However, the value of an heirloom, or it's family's history, is priceless.

So who else would buy it if it's difficult for everyone to find the missing pieces? Only a collector with deep pockets would/could buy this to use the case if needed and then they would still like to keep everything original/matched?

Someone needing the parts. The lightning seconds hand for example. Or someone with a poor case being opportunistic to add a better one with papers. Who knows.. Just the 50’s oyster band is worth a pretty penny lose.

I am sure there are buyers willing to pay tens of thousands for this project if offered.

I would take it as a project looking for the missing parts.

Like roh123 said, it's an almost impossible project. It would be a real struggle to find a decent dial and insert for this. Top examples are approaching half a million USD now. You'd need to get one of those for the parts, but stripping it of the parts to fix this one would be pointless.

This watch just needs to be enjoyed for what it is. Or send it to Rolex and let them restore it, then at least it will be "correct." The vintage value is gone anyway.
