So nice to see people understanding these watches. Although I understand the temptation to think of Plato with regard to the 1016, there's a bit of extra charm in the 3 Arabic numerals and the triangle, an alignment of the stars that allows you to have your cake and eat it too in the intersection of the utilitarian batons with a bit of expressiveness in the font of the numerals. Add horizontal symmetry and vertical directionality, and you've got fundamental design dynamics of unity and variety maxed out. It's a classic for a reason, and I hope to own one some day.

I have missed two R serials. One with full set, almost unpolished was priced at 18k euros in 2019. Another one without b/p but unpolished with green caseback sticker at 16,5k euros in december 2019.

I love your philosophy: it's easy to forget that our time is finite and to remember to treat ourselves. |

1967. It’s got replacement sub hands (short) - and probably a dual to boot. I would have loved a full box set but at the end of the day i don’t wear the box and not planning on selling anyways. The 1016 was the first Rolex I ever saw- I had a classmate in high school and his parents got him a 1016 for a birthday. I was in awe and always loved it. Fast forward and once I figured out what it was ...wanted it. With some wisdom gained from the folks here- I finally just bit the bullet and made it happen.

Exactly. So is it the enthusiasts such as ourselves that drive the prices up? Does, let's say, an article in Hodinkee or similar, create an awareness of a once-obscure (at least for the brand) watch model and that increases demand for a model that doesn't have a ton of supply? I own one Rolex: a 1972 1601 Datejust. I love it, but value-wise it sits on the bottom of the heap, even tho it is technically more complicated than an explorer and also contains precious metals. Is this because there were so many made? Because it's technically a dress watch and dress watches aren't the popular flavor at the moment?

Does anyone want to trade a 1601 Datejust for a 1016 Explorer?
The reference numbers are practically the same... |
