Dial Conditions 18238
Dear all,
I’m in the market for 5-digits Day Date & came across to this dealer in Instagram whom has one for sale. Can someone please help me to confirm that this dial is water damaged instead of ageing or “tropical”? Thanks, Jimmy https://www.instagram.com/fliegerb777/

It looks like a stone dial.

Looks like a good lapis stone dial. The stone dials typically have the metal borders round the day and date windows.

It's definitely a stone dial, doesn't look like the lapis that rolex typical uses. Also I'm not sure that Rolex ever did a lapis 18238 with roman numerals. Looks more like aventurine to me.

Im pretty sure thats an aftermarket dial or a newer service option. Never seen roman numerals on an 18038/18238 before.

Looks 100% like 18238 Aventurine Roman dial to me, dial no. 9A, there’s an identical dial (with a bit less wear) on a 18208 on C24 now.
(Imho, if they’re selling it under $18K, you’re stealing it ...) |

If the price is well below market, you may be looking at a dial-swapped DD without documentation.
If you don’t plan to use RSC in future it may not matter. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I spoke with an AD just yesterday about this topic as I was mulling over the idea of having my DJ dial swapped, and he said they would do it but you would have to get the watch serviced with the swap, and that I could get any dial Rolex had in stock for my watch for about $500 more than the service cost. |

The dial we are looking at doesn’t fit into the statement your AD made. I can assure you that it would be well above $500. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

hence why I said the price was quoted for the dial of MY watch. Regardless, of what the dial costs, Rolex would have no problem servicing this piece which your post initially stated they wouldn't unless the dial was original to the watch... which is untrue.

I can’t speak to your watch but what I mean to convey to the OP is that a redial can have consequences with the RSC. For example: If an indie watchmaker does a dial swap on a watch - even using a dial that was originally available for that model - the RSC will note that the dial wasn’t originally delivered on that watch. When the RSC does the dial swap it is added to the database for that s/n - if I wasn’t clear, my mistake. My point is buy a documented vintage piece as opposed to buying a piecemeal vintage watch. Thanks good point. I’d wager Rolex was even looser on the 4 digit models too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

It makes no difference who put on the dial, as long as the watch is an authentic Rolex part, they won't refuse to service your watch/require you to change the dial. the only time it would matter is if it was a TT/solid gold dial on a SS or vice versa. improper bezels for the reference, etc. Unless 2 identical watches were presented to me with B&P and the paperwork stated one of the watches had a dial swap at some point, I couldn't imagine it affecting the value at all. a proper restoration is perfectly acceptable in the collectors market. fact is, plenty of watches have period correct parts swapped in to create near perfect examples of vintage watches. |
