Beirut
Such a shame this beautiful country has dealt with so much tragedy for so long.
Everyone’s got a relative that’s heard stories of the style, beauty, wealth and culture that is Lebanon. Beirut was known as the Paris of the Mediterranean for many years and I’d really like to visit one day. Be strong Beirut. |

At first I was like, RAMMSTEIN!!! HELL YEAH!!!
Then, KA-Blooooey! A shockwave, and mayhem. That was insane. Someone on another board said that ammonium nitrate makes that brown smoke. I just wished I was wearing my brown pants. |

When I lived in Iran in the 70s, we’d zip over to Lebanon for long weekends. It was a fabulous place with unlimited activities, especially sea related; sailing, fishing, waterskiing in the morning, then snow skiing in the afternoon. Lots of interesting stimulating things to partake of, great food, wines.
Unfortunately the long lasting civil war put an end to that. What a shame. Lebanon can’t catch a break.

It's tragic, really. My husband lived there for three years before arriving in the States and he's devastated on a personal level. Just watching the explosion is horrifying. Hopefully the world will put aside political, religious and other issues and join forces and help them recover as much as possible.

Was this an accident or was it an act of terrorism? Can't really find a clear answer in the news at the moment. Awful tragedy :(

Over 100 lives lost and countless more shattered.
It’s a terrible tragedy which by all accounts was some kind of accident. It would be great if we could all treat disasters in countries outside our usual sphere with as much importance as those within.

Horrible accident. Such a tragic event.
Sounds like it was improperly stored ammonium nitrate. Fertilizer/explosive. The shock wave shows how strong of a blast it was. https://youtu.be/4pHtWn7LJRQ |

Hard to say, a lot of military experts are claiming that the orange ploom was indicative of military grade explosives being used.
Some are saying it was the ammonium nitrate itself. The fact that it went off all at once is what made it questionable as ammonium nitrate itself isn’t all that explosive. But plenty of evidence also supports the explosion. Seems there are always conspiracies surrounding catastrophic events but I think what’s important right now is to keep Lebanon in our thoughts and prayers and keep speculation to a minimum until there’s more concrete evidence surrounding what happened. |

Just reading about a Russian ship filled with ammonium nitrate, on its way to Madagascar back in 2013, when the deal was called off. It ended up docked in Beirut and has been sitting there ever since.

Beirut
That sounds much like the backstory of the cargo that exploded - with exception of this ammonium nitrate being in sling bags stored in a warehouse.

The before and after satellite photos support the warehouse being ground zero.
BBC reporting: Lebanon's President, Michel Aoun, blamed the detonation on 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that he said had been stored unsafely at a warehouse in the port. A similar amount of the chemical arrived on a Moldovan-flagged cargo ship, the MV Rhosus, which docked in Beirut in 2013 after suffering technical problems while sailing from Georgia to Mozambique. The Rhosus was inspected, banned from leaving and was shortly afterwards abandoned by its owners, according to Shiparrested.com. Its cargo was reportedly transferred to Warehouse 12 following a court order, and should have been disposed of or resold. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-53668493 Also: In 1921, about 4,500 tonnes of ammonium nitrate caused an explosion at a plant in Oppau, Germany, killing more than 500 people The deadliest industrial accident in US history occurred in 1947 at Galveston Bay, Texas. At least 581 people were killed when more than 2,000 tonnes of the chemical detonated on-board a ship which had docked in the port More recently, an explosion involving ammonium nitrate and other chemicals killed 173 people in the port of Tianjin northern China in 2015. https://www.bbc.com/news/explainers-53664064
