Some may find this AskMen.com article both amusing and enlightening.

http://smile.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_...o+5+green+dial But, green dial or not, I think there are a bunch of Seiko 5 watches that could be spiffed up nicely in that price range.

I really liked the SP043k (Spork) and bought one just before they discontinued them, they now sell for more than when they were produced. The only modification I did to mine was get a red second hand installed and bought a Watchadoo bracelet. Its built like a battleship.
Before the mods.

Well, Ed, you need to read the article. Apparently, that picture is a stock photo, which is probably shouldn't have been. The watch below seems to be the watch shown in the picture. http://smile.amazon.com/Seiko-SNXS73...o+5+white+dial

So the article is discussing the green flieger? That's a great watch.

It's tongue-in-cheek, but it makes sense, too. It's one of those paradoxes of life.

For example, a lot of people would not consider a quartz watch as high-end, but I think a quartz Grand Seiko is a perfect example of a high-end watch. Another example is how long a company has been in business. Obviously, a company that has been around since the 1700s or 1800s will have a long, rich history, but it isn't a requirement for a high-end watch. Again, GS was only introduced in the early 60's. FP Journe is even newer than GS and is super high-end. Nobody can deny that. I like the Seiko 5. I just don't think that it's greater than the sum of its parts. |

The article was an excellent bit of irony that only a WIS type could understand.

When you think of a high-end watch, a lot of things that come to mind are what the article listed. It's funny how a watch can meet those things, yet not be high-end. It makes you think about what a high-end really is and why.

Good question. To sum it up and being very simplistic in my mind high end means complicated hand made watches with impossible prices.

I think there are different levels of high-end. For me, a high-end watch must be something with a very, very high attention to detail and come from a company with a certain level of prestige. There are a lot of watches that fall into this category. Some are just more prestigious than others. |
