What a way to make an introduction.

If you are comfortable in your own skin, you can wear whatever you want. By the way, here is a good article for you:

Any idea what the model number is for the Seiko 5 pictured in that article? That may be the perfect watch.

Since they didn't mention a model number, I looked up "Seiko 5 green dial" on Amazon and came up with some possibilities.

http://smile.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_...o+5+green+dial

But, green dial or not, I think there are a bunch of Seiko 5 watches that could be spiffed up nicely in that price range.

I really liked the SP043k (Spork) and bought one just before they discontinued them, they now sell for more than when they were produced. The only modification I did to mine was get a red second hand installed and bought a Watchadoo bracelet. Its built like a battleship.

Before the mods.

Well, Ed, you need to read the article. Apparently, that picture is a stock photo, which is probably shouldn't have been.

The watch below seems to be the watch shown in the picture.

Interesting. The Seiko 5 is many things, unfortunately, high-end is not one of them.

If you read the article, you will find their criteria for the "cheapest high-end watch."

It's tongue-in-cheek, but it makes sense, too.

It's one of those paradoxes of life.

I was the guy in an OH-58 calling the artillery and air strikes.

Calling artillery was fuuuun. To me more exciting than the fast movers or cobras.

I read it. It does make sense, I agree, but the criteria for a high-end watch is not set in stone. There is some gray area.

For example, a lot of people would not consider a quartz watch as high-end, but I think a quartz Grand Seiko is a perfect example of a high-end watch.

Another example is how long a company has been in business. Obviously, a company that has been around since the 1700s or 1800s will have a long, rich history, but it isn't a requirement for a high-end watch. Again, GS was only introduced in the early 60's. FP Journe is even newer than GS and is super high-end. Nobody can deny that.

I like the Seiko 5. I just don't think that it's greater than the sum of its parts.

The article was an excellent bit of irony that only a WIS type could understand.

When you think of a high-end watch, a lot of things that come to mind are what the article listed. It's funny how a watch can meet those things, yet not be high-end. It makes you think about what a high-end really is and why.

Good question. To sum it up and being very simplistic in my mind high end means complicated hand made watches with impossible prices.

So Rolex is not high-end?

I think there are different levels of high-end. For me, a high-end watch must be something with a very, very high attention to detail and come from a company with a certain level of prestige. There are a lot of watches that fall into this category. Some are just more prestigious than others.

Unfortunately not in my opinion. Just the best mass production watch, and my favorite.
