Unexpected find

I was visiting my uncle over the holidays and we were talking watches. He mentioned that my late grandfather had bought a Rolex in the 50s and he put it in the safe in 1970 and it has been there ever since.
Obviously that sparked my interest and he’s been to the bank and got the watch out and sent me photos (I’ve asked for better pictures, he lives in a different country than me).
Any thoughts about this watch? I will try and get it restored properly and told him not to send it to Rolex!
I’ll update with better photos when I can. He can’t remove the bracelet unfortunately, says he doesn’t know how and doesn’t want to ruin it!

.
Very nice!
I would guess 1600 series Datejust because of the look of the piepan dial and was available in the late 50's.
The dial appears refinished but no biggie, these dials are readily available in the secondary market.

Keep us posted on the restoration.

Dont think it's 50s or even very early 60s - hard to tell from that photo, but looks like its a post 1964 1603 with a SCOC dial and T SWISS T footer.

Yes, these family stories aren't always accurate.

While the photos are poor, my gut feeling from the dial, hands, and clasp is ref 1603 from the late 60s or early 70s.

Also, one of the end-links appears to be a later replacement 555 (perhaps aftermarket), so I'm not sure the watch has been in a safe since 1970.

Interesting! Thanks all for the input- yep the memories of family doesn't tend to be the most reliable.
Once I get it in hand I'll update with some proper pics and take I from there!

Looks like my former 1601 (circa 1967). Mine was restored by RSC.

Some updates as my uncle managed to get some better photos.

You’re right 1967 1603. Dial might be salvageable, but will see.

Bracelet is a 6251H, with one 55 end link and one 555 end link!

That's a great family heirloom! Restore it. Wear, pass down and repeat...
