<<< Life Lessons >>>

Taking inspiration from this thread:

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...=883181&page=2

I thought we could share some of life’s little lesson’s here for our mutual growth, amusement, whatever …

I’ll lead it off.

We go on a golf trip every spring and it’s a road trip. We’ve flown before, but there’s something about driving 16 hours, eating fast food, and holding it as long as possible between pit stops that brings us back to our youth

Anyway, on one particular gas stop, I decided I was peckish. Tired of chips, peanuts etc, I spotted a delicious looking sandwich, you know the ones … “exactly how long have you had that sandwich ma’am”? “Sir it’s fresh, check the expiry date”. “

What could possibly go wrong? About 5 hours later my gut told me I indeed made a poor decision and I must’ve cost us 2 hours of commute time from throwing up and stuff coming out the other end. It was BRUTAL.

I’ve never eaten a gas station sandwich, hotdog, or you name it since.

Lesson, at a gas station, if it’s not in a sealed package with Fritos or some such brand on it, it’s not for me.

Please share some of your life’s lessons. Thanks.

When I was a kid my dad [who worked w/ metals] made items for me & my sisters [custom go kart and chopper forks for my Stingray bike, solid brass baby bed for my sister] as well as things around the house. He decided to make a pair of lamps for the living room. He cut, lathed, stained, & finished the wood, fabricated a brass wax catcher [for the imitation candlesticks] and 2 sets of round brass feet. The parts were assembled and placed on end tables on each side of the couch. Everything my dad made was [is] first class. No Homer Simpson spice racks here.

A few days later, he was walking thru the living room and stopped while looking at the lamps. The round brass feet were removed and he came back the next day to reinstall them. This time they were shorter and wider. Once installed, he said w/ confidence "now they're done." What a difference that small change made to the overall aesthetics. I learned then & there that it's the smallest details that can make the biggest difference.

I've been sweating the tiny details ever since.

Agree, Brian. Leading by example is always the most potent influence.

As one who's done lots of travel for both work & leisure, I'm happy to report I haven't had any issues like those you experienced. However, that doesn't mean it hasn't taken a toll on my system.

I had to resign / retire early due to injuries sustained while on the job. After a long haul I was placed on permanent disability status. That drastically reduced my income and still affects me today. However, being at home it allowed me to have ample time to properly raise my daughter who has Asperger’s. She has grown and matured into an amazing young lady and graduates next Spring from College with the highest honors. :)

Had I still been in the workforce my energy and mental health would’ve been greatly affected trying to tend to her needs. There’s no way we both would’ve made it through the pandemic with our sanity intact!

So, I guess things really do turn out the way they do for a reason! We have an amazing relationship which I am grateful for daily.

Brian, you made me google “peckish”
It must be a Canadian expression… lol

I’m really sorry to hear about your injuries Janet. Good on you for turning something so negative into a HUGE positive I wish your daughter continued success

Yes, peckish is my moms expression. Mom’s really are the best

I once went on a golf trip with a bunch of jr PGA pros and they all chewed tobacco and used coffee cups as spittoons.

Hold onto your cup and don’t put it in a cup holder.

That’s all I’m going to say.

Don't take people or your health for granted. I've made a point to tell people around me that I appreciate, care, and value them as appropriate (both personal and professional interactions).
You never know when your time, or theirs, is over.

This is great advice, and something I need to become better at. I tell my wife and kids every day, others not so much. Thanks for the reminder

Lol, I made one of those mistakes just yesterday. Some sketchy hot pork rinds from the Spanish gas station. They were delicious, then the cramps and rumbling came.

Sometimes it is cheaper to pay a professional.

Being accountable and forthright with your mistakes is always the best policy.

Always give credit where it’s due and show appreciation.

If you kill something it better not go to waste.

Quality leather products will last you a lifetime.

Be nice to everyone throughout your life, you never know if the lanky girl from high school will eventually be a model. Or the kid you thought was nerdy ends up being your bosses boss.

Stand up for your principles and do not back down when pressured. A little back bone goes a long way.

Do not be afraid to take one on the chin. Life will kick you in the pants sometimes, you will live through it, don’t be afraid.

Perseverance is paramount. Never give up or quit.

You’re not as smart as you think you are, listen instead of talk even if you are an expert on the subject. What the other person says will tell you a lot about them.

Strong moves, set yourself apart from the rest. No one ever made history by going with the crowd.

A few of my favorites, lots of hockey/life ones

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take"........Walter and or Wayne Gretzky.

"Keep your stick on the ice" ......every hockey coach I ever had. It means be ready for every opportunity.

"Keep your head on a swivel".........every hockey coach I ever had. It means be aware and ready for anything.

Has always stuck with me.
