Recommendations on espresso machines
After 25 years, our espresso machine literally grenaded with a large chunk of metal shrapnel detaching itself. Looking to replace with something under $1000. Any recommendations are welcomed.

I'm in the research process right now. Here are some helpful reviews put together by coffee pros for the NY Times and Wire Cutter.
The grinder is so important that you are better off having your coffee supplier grind them for you in their professional machine if you can't afford or don't want to pay for a high quality burr grinder. They say even though you lose some freshness with preground beans, the result of just having them grind for you and losing some freshness is still light years better than the garbage you will get from using the freshest beans in a bad grinder if you can't budget for a decent one. https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/r...r-for-espresso https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/r...offee-grinder/ Also check out James Hoffman on YouTube. Lifelong coffee industry pro and World Barista Championship winner in 2007. He does a ton of reviews of machines for all budgets, grinders, accessories, you name it. Great channel. Thanks for the links. Looking at three separate machines: Gaggia, Breville and DeLonghi

If you can swing it, and you want semi auto (not super auto), anything with the E61 grouphead is good. We went big and got a Rocket Cinquantotto. It's a beast and hopefully will outlive us. We justified the expense by eliminating Starbucks and coffee shops for daily routine. We still go periodically on social calls (with friends, etc)... but the daily coffee money was adding up and it was an easy decision. Have had it for two years now and it's been great.

Gaggia Brera super-automatic. About $485 on Amazon. I’ve had one for 3 years, it gets daily use making 8-10 shots. Works like a champ, if it ever dies I’ll buy another.

What happened, exactly, to the Saeco? I’m intrigued.

I have a Jura A1. Its about 800 USD. It's a super automatic that makes coffee, and espresso. I recommend it highly. Swiss made, low maintenance, great creama.

Breville Dual Boiler was my pick in that price range
More of an "Appliance" than anything from the traditional manufactures at that price point but feature loaded and a great workhorse I doubt you'd get 25 years out of it, but I've seen DBs with over 12,000 shots on them that are still going strong with regular servicing As many have stated already, though, a decent grinder is much more important than a machine I was making great shots on a $200 Breville Bambino paired with a ($1000) Niche Zero grinder

This is the one I'm looking at when I finally get around to pulling the trigger on one.

After attaching the group head with the portofiller, a 2" piece of metal blew off the edge of the group head. All I can come up with is that after 25 years of pressure it finally experienced a stress fracture and blew up.

Profitec - damn these really are beautiful. I was just watching a video on Whole Latte Love where they visit the manufacturing plant outside Milan. You see them hand assemble machines during the video. Really cool. I like that the Pro 700 can be hard plumbed vs using the standard reservoir.
Since I'm a mere mortal and a beginner at that, I'm currently leaning towards the Gaggia Classic Pro. Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk |

I have no knowledge really...... but I receive spam from Miele.
I do however own one of their dishwashers and it's hands down the best machine to clean dishes I've ever used! Worth a look? |

Cafelat Robot if you don't need to steam milk - it will last you many lifetimes, is easy to clean and requires no maintenance. Cafelat's owner, Paul Pratt, is an old-school machining savant (his instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cafelatco/?hl=en) and also has a nice collection of 70s watches.
If you need to steam milk - you'll struggle to find a good machine under $1000. Maybe look at Breville's Bambino Plus? Also echoing earlier comments - preferably 70-80% of your budget should go towards the grinder, it's much more important than the machine. This is the cheapest grinder I'd recommend: https://www.option-o.com/shop/lagom-mini If you're ready to plunge into the coffee rabbit hole check James Hoffman's youtube channel and the home-barista forum. |

I am for a year with Gaggia Classic. But beside the espresso machine it's very important the grinder too. My grinder is Bezerra and works excellent for making shots using naked porta filter.

Indeed I have had a miele super auto for about 4 years and it’s been smooth sailing. OP needs to make that decision on super auto or not though as the outcome won’t rival a well handled rocket etc with a high end grinder but I just push a button and down it as I have a toddler. I’m tempted to get a lamarzocco mini but I just don’t drink enough espresso to justify it as I’m somewhat sensitive to caffeine unfortunately.
