Older BNIB watches
I should know this, but I do not.
a buddy is looking at an 8 year old BNIB watch. top tier brand. I cautioned him as the oils might very well be all dunked up from it sitting for so long. is this a real concern or am I making things up? should he have in serviced based on this? any advice would be appreciated. thank you,

No expert here but if it runs fine then I wouldn't bother with a service.

Probably is fine, but should also be lubed up again. It's like a car, if there is oil in there still it will still run of course, but it's better for the car to have fresh new oil. Tell him to take it down to the local jiffy!

X2. Modern lubes are great but they can get gunky if let sitting too long.

You say top tier brand, if this is a ~$50k+ piece, I'd spend the money to have it serviced for peace of mind.

See if it runs within spec after a few initial days on the wrist.

I’d assume it will need a service soon and if it doesn’t great you win haha
If it’s Patek good lord you might be with it for 6 months.

Older BNIB watches
A full service would be as advisable for many reasons.
Before opening, I’d have a dry pressure test done. It is useful to know if all the gaskets have maintained integrity over past 8 years. Opening it is the only way to assess how much the lube has degraded, migrated from sitting too long in one position without running, or dried up completely. Why the mystery about make & model? Any "pre-owned" watch I have ever purchased has gone in for service within a few weeks after buying. I factor in the service cost with the purchase.
Even after "buying the seller", I like the piece of mind knowing the watch has been authenticated, serviced, and warrantied for 2 or more years. |

And no mystery. Not sure why I didn’t post details. It’s a patek. Don’t recall the model. He’s out looking now.

If your friend gets the watch and it is not keeping acceptable time, maybe a service is warranted. I would put it on my wrist immediately and start wearing/enjoying it.

It ain’t a car. It’s a watch. It’s not gonna break down on the freeway or a lonely road at night where a guy with a hook clamps onto your door handle…….I digress…sorry. Wear it until it fails, then get it fixed and wear it again. All this sending it to the repair shop for months for no reason seems like a waste of money. It’ll tell you when it’s not happy.

When I was buying my 116718 LB almost a decade ago, my friend who worked at the AD told me to wait for a new watch to be shipped from Switzerland rather than take the one that had been sitting in the display case for years.

I don’t believe in servicing a watch if it runs fine, nothing to gain and your watch is gone for a few months.

Put it on a timegrapher. If daily rate, amplitude and beat error all look good, then don't bother with a service.
