Going to Washington DC - tips/advice/reviews wanted

Doing a three day weekend June 11th
Have tickets to the Wine Enthusiast's toast of the Town...
Try to hit one of the spots each year..

Was wondering if anyone had anyother advice for restaurants, things to do etc.

I've already contacted my embassy and put in my request for a white house tour.

want to go to the Smithsonian...what else would any of you who've been there, live there recommend?

Its going to be my wife and I.

I'm early 30's she's late 20's...

Would appreciate any input...

DC has great many museums (Smithsonian, National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Art, National Air & Space Museum, American History Museum) and places of significant interest (The White House, Washington Monument, Capitol Building, etc). Lots to see.

I love the Northern Virginia area (Tyson's Corner, McLean). I would personally stay there as I like suburban areas over the city. You can easily take the DC Metro into DC from NOVA.

Have a great time !

FYI, the Smithsonian is MULTIPLE buildings... Good luck with the white house tour, doubt you'll get in... For good greasy food, go to Ben's chili bowl.

D.C. is fantastic...Tons to see.
F.Y.I. - this is one of the clocks at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. It's out a way by the airport but very cool if you are into aircraft, and Rolex!

Don't live there but DH and I went for a visit last year. Arlington National Cemetery is amazing. The Holocaust museum is heart breaking but will stick with you. Lots of great restaurants--you might check zagats. Also, after dinner some evening if it's dark and you feel adventurous, go back to the Mall and see some of the monuments lit up. I remember the Korean War Monument (it's a group of very lifelike soldiers trudging along) is uplit and kinda spooky-cool at night.

Take a day and do Air and Space, Natural History and US History Museums.

Take another day and do Holocaust, Mint, the various memorials, the Capital and WH if you can.

Wear something comfortable and functional. Don't worry how you look. You'll be in the middle of masses of tourists. Cargo shorts and running shoes. Don't eat anything from the roach coaches outside any of the museums.

This is great stuff... I can't wait for this trip..

How about the night life? any dueling piano bars? Martini bars?

I'm a firm believer of "when in Rome", but Cargo pants I could never do...

There so much to do in DC. Parking sucks but when you
find a spot everything is in walking distance of the mall.

I work in Washington, DC. The questions you asked about restaurants, etc. come up often. So last year I took some time and wrote a short list of places and things that I think are must dos (or must eat as the case may be). I've attached a PDF for your convenience.

Let us know how it goes.

Just FYI--I'm new to the forum, so if I've breached newbie protocol by adding an attachment or some such, I apologize in advance.

I highly recommend taking one of the "Segway" tours in the city.

For a nice splurge, consider taking a tour by limousine. The drivers know the city and will tailor the tour for your interests.
