Nub Maduro this evening

Surprisingly the short length still provides a long smoke (just over 1 hour) as it didn't get bitter at any point. The final third is usually where I'm getting bitterness and tarry nicotine tastes. With the nub I smoked it past where the band sits and it never became overpowering. I'll be picking up a few more of these.

My Cuban crafters cutter also arrived today - thanks for the heads up earlier in this thread, the cutter is excellent.

I've enjoyed the Nub Maduro myself.

Congrats on the Cuban Crafter's Perfect Cutter. A better value or performance in a cutter you will not find.

Aged Arturo Fuente Chateau Natural Rothschild

Arturo Fuente Chateau Natural Rothschild......I have had these for at least 15 years, aging nicely......smoking it today...was so much smoother than smoking one fifteen years ago, as I recall! Pics in the link below. Glad I put them away, back then.....

I had an Acid blondie for a break today and will probibly have a 7-20-4 "dogwalker" tomorrow.
I have a question for you guys, I am getting married soon and figured I would supply some sticks for the guys. What would you guys recommend for a meduim sized or a little smaller very easily enjoyed smoke for a group of guys who do and do not smoke regularly? Thanks

Hey Matt

First of all congrats on your upcoming wedding! Stay calm buddy! It will all be over with soon!

Now on to the smokes - when ever I hear the audience is new to smoking cigars I immediately think "mild" smoke. I would not bring a medium or full bodied stick but rather something lighter on the palate that they might enjoy more. To that end I would suggest something like a Macanudo. I especially liked their regular and Gold Label lines when I was starting out. Don Diego and Cusano 18 are also worth trying but stick with the Connecticut shade wrappers for any of the ones mentioned above.

Hope this helps and keep me posted on your upcoming big event? When is it by the way?

Drew,

Spot on about starting mild. Your suggestion of the Macanudo Gold Label series [just picked up another yesterday] is perfect as it's a great high quality mild cigar w/ great flavor and easy draw. I'd also mention Fuente Hemingway Signature as well.

7-20-4 Churchill. By far the best of the series. Unbelievable flavors and complexity.

Hello Dan

Nice to finally meet you and thanks for the kind words. I just had this identical discussion with someone else and offered the same suggestions.

Most novice smoker are always worried about "is this a good cigar?", like they would know the difference? IMO it takes years to train your tastes to certain brands/flavors. I always offer strangers mild smokes to start and see how it goes. Most of the time they enjoy a Mac more than a Monte!

Anyway, Matt, here's hoping you enjoy your day and your smokes!

Ok, haven't uploaded for a while so here's a few I've had recently

Oliva Serie G

This one is a huge novelty. Square box pressed torpedo with a pig tail style cap on the foot. I enjoyed it but it wasn't amazing. I found the shape entertaining but it did lead to some odd construction issues with soft spots and irregular burning.

Next up was an Ashton VSG

This was excellent. The last third was sublime and I didn't want it to end. Excellent draw and construction with a lovely mild taste to start gradually turning up the spice and pepper as it progressed. Lovely.

Finally last night I had an Oliva Serie V.

It was good, but not as good as the Ashtons VSG's I've had recently. Nothing notable neither great nor terrible, just middle of the road for me. I felt it was neither a smooth mild smoke or a powerhouse and it left me wondering exactly what it was. Perhaps I'll pick up another one and give it a second chance.

Smoked this yesterday. A gift from a very generous friend. This is an original release black label Tatuaje. Black labels are very hard to come by, and an original release is nearly impossible.

It was unreal. I giggled like a schoolgirl after the first few draws.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present for your consideration the Arturo Fuente Curly Head Deluxe

This is an interesting cigar. Made by the same people who produce the well regarded Hemingways as well as my favourite the Chateau Fuente is this oddity. Unlike the regular Fuentes this cigar has an absolutely terrible look. Not so much 'rustic' as if I had actually rolled it myself. In the dark. While suffering from DTs.

Why is is called Curly Head?

The filler doesn't come all the way to end of the wrapper which is just sort of folded in on itself.

The Curly head is a budget cigar using left over scraps form the Fuente lines. If you open the cigar up you would see lots of short strands of leaf similar to cigarette tobacco but thicker. The construction really is terrible with a very thin wrapper that started to come undone half way through the smoke.

But...how does it taste?

Actually pretty good. Lovely balanced smoke with no burn issues despite the wonky manufacturing. I did enjoy the taste but not the experience. This was a good example where taste is not the only factor in the enjoyment. The look and aesthetic construction are to me critical and despite the good taste the unwinding wrapper really let it down.

Had a La Verite Vintage 2008 yesterday. Very hard to find Tatuaje smokes.

Made with tobacco from a single farm, these are the cigar equivalent of a single vineyard wine.

How was it? I like the idea of single vintage - I'm a huge fan of single cask malt whisky and enjoy the variety it results in as no two casks are ever the same.

I have had the 2008 and the 2009. Both are outstanding, but different due to more than just crop differences. The 2009 has more tobacco varietals. The 2008 was Habano -only- whereas the 2009 has Habano, Criollo, and Pelo de Oro varietals.
