After almost 3 years I join the Rolex Owners

Hi guys,
I want to say thanks to all of the members on this forum who take their time to answer questions and provide a library of information about Rolex watches.

I had been getting very close to finally purchasing my Explorer II and with the eminent price increase I knew that I had to make a decision this weekend. So yesterday my wife and I were out shopping and ended up close to the AD so we pulled in. After my wife tried on several watches and couldn't find anything she liked (she's after an Omega) I found my Exp II.

It was the only Exp II they had at that store and I happened to notice that it was an F serial. I found it odd that they would have a 5 year old watch but it was all new with all of the stickers still on and looked like it hadn't been handled much.

I went in prepared (thanks to TRF) and negotiated an exceptional deal. We all had a blast. No fewer than 3 salesladies got involved as well as the manager and I think it was the most fun I ever had negotiating a purchase. I can't wait to do it again!

Congratulations...

I can say that the black dial Explorer II probably goes with me on more adventures than any other watch I own.........

(it's probably been torn apart on more TRF DIY projects than any other too)

It's still going strong after almost a decade......

Welcome to the club. I have been eyeing a polar Explorer II myself. I'm going to wait until the new Explorer II comes out before I make a decision. Congratulations.

Thanks guys. I really didn't walk in with the intention of buying yesterday but I finally threw an offer at them that I didn't think they would take and after some discussion, they took it so I knew I had to write the check!

I'm glad I had the opportunity to buy at an AD so that I could have the full warranty and my name on the papers.

Is it commonplace to see a 5 year old model at an AD still in the case? I can see maybe 2 or 3 years but 5 seems like a stretch for a busy dealer as they were. The saleslady mentioned that the owner probably had it in the safe for a good part of that time.

Are there any updates that I am missing on this watch other than the ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX rehaut engraving?

Serial numbers are frequently misunderstood, but, yes, it is unusual to see an F still in the case, but not unheard of.. Like you, if the deal was good, I would have written the check too.

If yours has 8 digits, it is a random serial, not an F serial, which has 7 digits.. but I suspect that it is the latter..

In the last decade the only changes with the Explorer II have been the engraved rehaut, and recently the 3186 movement is being used. In use and function they are still identical...........

It isn't a random serial. They checked it through the computer also and it came up as 5 years old. It's all the same to me though!

Nice looking Explorer II. I prefer the black dial to the polar one, and imo, you're not missing anything with the rehaut engraving. Enjoy your new watch!
