Of course not. 99.9999% of the people in the world don't have one and they are surviving nonetheless.

Not for me, I find the dial to be way too busy for my taste.

If you're interested in a chronograph, check out the Zenith's, they make some nice pieces which I find easier to read.

There is no such thing as a must have in watches. Now, if you want to have a collection of Rolex sport watches, a daytona would be in the mix for me (but only along with a Sub and a GMT).

i like chronos but i have a few already. i just noticed that the daytona has a cult like following. and it seems to sell really well. so i figured that most "collectors" would consider it a must have due to its iconic status.

Not MUST HAVE, but close
Agree with many who feel Sub or DJ are the real MUST HAVE's.
But I can't lie to you. The SS Daytona is, and always will be, one absolutely magnificent timepiece. There's something about that magical face and that magical case. I don't really care that the subdials are actually hard to read.... |

IMO, if you get but one Rolex in your lifetime...prolly not gonna be the Daytona.
But, one hopes, a life well-spent will include many Rolex models over time. And if you plan a lifetime of timepieces, the Daytona belongs in your list.

I think the cult following on the Daytona might be due to it being the only Chrono watch in Rolex's line up with new followers coming in after reading what others said is their grail and the cycle continues.
I don't think its a must have but I do like the look of it with the three sub dial making it look quite different from most of Rolex model's dial. However, I don't quite feel that the price justify the watch in terms of the SS models. |

thanks guys i appreciate the honesty. i figured most of you would have said "yes" because there is alot of hype after it. I do like chronos afterall since i own 3, but since the new subc i am soooo happy with just the simple layout.

I do love the Daytona! I suppose it has a somewhat cult following, although for about 11k now its kinda expensive. I'd rather pick up a speedy its just as good looking IMHO.
