Don't forget that when Ferrari didn't do team orders in Germany and Italy this year, everyone was saying how dumb they were to throw away all those points Vettel could've accumulated over Hamilton.

I love Kimi, great driver.... but luck has never been with him. So yeah, Ferrari should have treated him as they did Rubens. Then again Rubens had good luck, Kimi, not so much.

Not at all.

My example was meant to show how a “compliant” action by one team can disadvantage another driver. I simply used Ferrari as an example. I’m not taking sides among teams.

I know the rule book allows it.

I agree!!

It’s been happening since Fangio and Moss’ day!

Let’s not forget when they used to have spare cars etc too.

Instead of Mercedes celebrating a 1-2 finish, ALL the media attention was about team orders and not the result. I just feel that if handled differently this situation could have been avoided.

Toto admitted himself that he was up the night before worrying about the 2002 Schumacher/Rubens debacle.

I agree that they are racers at heart and they started that race with the intention of letting them race. I also agree that it would be different if Bottas was still in the title fight.

The biggest difference this year compared to the Rosberg years is Mercedes were so dominant they were just racing themselves whereas now they actually have a battle on their hands to win the constructors championship.

And none of that matters at all since they finished 1-2 and would have no matter which one of them won.

The reason Toto was up the night before is because he cares about what this would do to Bottas and team moral, not because he cares about what the media would say.

Everything I've read in the media has been pretty positive about it. Saying Mercedes made the right decision.

I am also a Hamilton fan and I understand why they made the call. Hell, Ferrari did the same thing with Raikkonen earlier in the season (although they waited too long to make the call IMO).

Vettel may have a stiff task ahead after the error in Q3.
Without a Podium, and if Lewis wins, the Driver’s Crown will be almost unobtainable for him.

Seb did a great recovery in the race. Really except for the two leaders. Lots of action and passing.

Surprised at the empty seats though.

Well Vettel's 3 grid place penalty should seal the title for Lewis.

It would have taken a miracle for him to win it anyway. But yeah, it's over.

All these penalties are destroying the competitiveness of the racing, especially the engine replacement penalties.

Is it F1, the pinnacle of motor sport racing - fast and powerful, or an economy run to use the least amount of fuel, and conserve the power....what the heck is going on!!

The Official Formula One Thread!

The cost containment began as smaller teams began to wilt against the budgets of Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull. The change to turbo’d 6 cyl. engines followed. And now Liberty Media will start budget caps in 2021.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/csylt/2...f-formula-one/

I hate the limitations. Yet I like to see full fields. Otherwise there’d only be 6 cars in the race.

When I first saw your post I figured it was a penalty for engine or tire or gearbox change. But then I looked and saw FIA Stewards applied the new red flag rule.

Vettel failed to stay above the minimum time set by the FIA during a red flag period in FP1 caused by an incident involving Sauber’s Charles Leclerc.

The Stewards ruling on the matter stated: “Art. 31.6 was added this year to ensure that drivers reduce speed significantly during a red flag. Breach of this regulation is seen to be an extremely serious matter.”

Felt this way for a long time. Excepting America's Cup racing, there is no other more ostentatious display of wealth in the sporting world. Like Bernie Ecclestone said, if you can’t afford to be there, don’t go racing.

I think we should go back to the days of unlimited in season testing, refueling during races and skip the requirement that you use at least two different tire compounds unless it’s a wet race.

Oh, and go back to the 3.0- or 3.5-liter V-8 or V-10 motors and their god-almighty sound!! Most people in the real world don’t give a shit about hybrid engines.

F1 certainly has changed since the 'old' days of yore, (ie the 70's and 80's..) but some changes were for the good, ie, refueling during races..- but still, some of the 'fun' is gone. It's BIG Business now.. and BIG Bux......!

I agree with you to a certain extent Steve.

In this particular case the penalty is completely justified. All penalties on safety grounds need to be strictly enforced so we don’t have another Jules Bianchi incident.

With regards to engine/gearbox penalties this is completely ruining the sport.

I agree with the post above. Why are we pretending that F1 is now somehow green? Can you imagine the carbon footprint flying and shipping the F1 circus around the world alone!!!

The 3 engines per season rule is stupid too because drivers are constantly protecting engines/saving fuel/saving tyres. I want to see them flat out from start to finish!

Also agree with bringing in season testing back too. I’m sick of seeing drivers ‘learning’ on a race weekend!

Great Q session if a little anticlimactic due to Seb’s 3 place grid penalty for violations red flag speeds.

What a US GP, especially at the end. Lewis is going to have to wait for his 5th title. I’m so happy for Kimi First win in 113 races.

That was quite a result as I thought Hamilton was going to wrap it up when Seb had a spin out after contacting with Dan Ric.
Roll on next week in Mexico.

Nice win for Kimi. He was on his game today and they couldn’t jack him up with team orders and/or a wingman strategy.

Agree..It was a great race and kudos to Verstappen from 18th to 2nd. Kimi earned that win... long overdue. Hamilton will have to wait until Mexico to wrap this up.

It was funny after the race the commentators were looking for a little more excitement out of Kimi but he is as calm and cool as ever.

“It’s not a big deal for me, it’s a much bigger deal for a lot of the people,” he said. “If it comes, it comes; if it doesn’t, it really doesn’t change my life one bit.

“I’m happy we are here and that we win but I think the biggest difference is the way people look at you. If you look at people in a different way if they win or not, it doesn’t make a lot of difference in my mind. But obviously I’m happy, just proving some people wrong is enough fun for me.”

GREAT race and wife / i were VERY happy Kimi won (even though we're Hamilton fans at heart). Kimi earned and deserves the win.

Finally Raikkonen wins.

He gets the short end of the stick, like Bottas.
