What do you think of the 2020 race scheduled to take place in Hanoi?

It makes sense other than the physical waste to the environment of building tracks when it all turns to custard a few years later. I refer to India, Turkey, Korea just to name a few

I go to Hanoi every year to visit the in-laws and if the race falls into the Easter holidays then I’ll be there in a flash.
I can’t see the race being popular with the locals as it’s too expensive and they don’t know anything about F1. Vietnamese are only obsessed with football.

That is fine. A new track is always interesting but I'd like a race in Germany more.

That’s true, in fact I’m surprised when Hanoi got the green flag. No body has a flying clue about motorsport there.
At least in India and Korea kids have chances to get into motorsport.
There is NOT a single kart track in Vietnam.

If they did that they would just add a second a third race in the US. But as others have said, motorsport is nonexistent in Vietnam.

As of now, but other 'countries', who weren't considered in the past, are now on the sched... So why not another 'venture'..

Because these countries like India, Korea and now Vietnam couldn't care less about motorsport in any form so the event turns into a complete failure. Would make much more sense to add a second race Japan, or Argentina where people at least have some inkling about motorsport. They just go where the money is.

Well I think it’s pretty much confirmed that Williams will be bringing up the back again.
If they don’t salvage the season somehow drivers, sponsors and other key people will be gone by Abu Dhabi, if not the summer break.

Can the Melbourne Grand Prix go ahead without a race director?

I believe they’ve been working on his long term successor for a while so they may have someone in mind.

I saw an interview with Ross Brawn who said what Charlie did on a race weekend was only 5% of the work he actually did and that it can’t be only one person that replaces him and his role.

I think Ross would make an excellent race director.

RIP Mr Whiting.

Most of the time, I don't give a $hit about anyone in the public eye. But for some reason, the death of Luke Perry and now Charlie Whiting really bothers me.

RIP to you both.

Does anyone also not think there should be more than one race director? Giving one person all of that responsibility is too much of a risk for corruption.

Well, since he was appointed in 1997, there's been no hint of corruption, wrong doing or favoritism, I think if the right person is appointed, the sport will be okay.

It is not about any one individual in particular, but risk of bias when it is conducted by only one individual.

Well waiting on qualifying having watched Sebring 12 hour. Looks like nothing has changed at the top of the order, Haas may have moved forward in midfield.

To add some context to that, I really thought Merc were in trouble through testing.

Looks like they’ve played a blinder!!

Missed qualifying but damn, Mercedes was sand bagging and playing mind tricks all the time.
Hamilton is on his way to his sixth WDC. Lol

A note of caution: Hamilton smashed the field up in qualifying last year at Melbourne by nearly seven tenths but didn’t win the race and Ferrari arguably had the fastest car at more tracks in 2018. Merc smashed the field by eight tenths today, but Melbourne is a pretty atypical layout.

That being said, it’s hilarious the way Merc were clearly mocking the field during testing.
