It’s not as much watches as it’s more about time itself and the devices. My grandfather and father both had all sorts of clocks in the house and neat wrist watches. I heard the chimes all day and all night. I was allowed to wind the grandfather clocks. That was holy in our home. Sometimes when I was very little I could hear my dad’s wrist watch when it was very quiet. It’s really a part of me and my fabric and that’s why I love watches.

I just am. Don’t need to justify it. I live in real world also.

I think it’s easy to explain to a non WIS, the key is often brevity.
It’s more difficult to explain to a WIS, the conversation can get long and deep lol. |

Agree. I go with a simple “my grandfather showed me his Rolexes when I was a young boy and I’ve loved watches ever since.”

I'm the oddball who likes things that took some skill to create...dress shoes, watches, comics, cameras... I really like old cars. I love my Nikon D5500.
I also love scuba diving. I like to go underwater to places that not many others have been to. I enjoy going offroading with friends. My Nissan Xterra is fantastic. I love fencing ..particularly epee and foil. Not many people even learn that sport. All that said, nobody has ever asked me why I'm into watches. |

In the extremely unlikely event that anyone asked, I would say "Because I am not into fishing, travel or smoking dope and a man needs something to waste his money on."

Women can wear all kinds of jewels and men can only wear luxury watches.

I’ve been asked this by somewhat judgmental family members who can easily afford any watch they want, but are not interested in them. I’ve realized that no amount of explaining or clever comments will ever get them to understand, or agree it is a worthwhile interest. So I just say something along the lines of that, because if someone needs this hobby explained to them they 1. Don’t get it; and 2. never will from anything I say.

I am intrigued by small, circuit-less, self-powered machines, and the things that I collect reflect that.

My father had some neat pieces when I was a kid. Notably, a Seiko Pogue. I always wanted to push the button when I was little and watch the red second hand go around.
Fast forward to High School in the 90's. I remember watching a TV show on Cable about the history of watches. They did a segment on Mechanical timepieces as well as the Bulova Accutron, and it really had me interested. Then a few friends of mine went to Russia on a school trip, and they came back with Vostok watches. That was it. First mechanical watch I purchased was a manual wind Vostok, and then I started hitting up Flea Markets and Garage Sales looking for old watches. The rest is history! My tastes have certainly changed, as have the funds I have to blow on non necessary items. |

I like engineering. I like punctuality. I like things that take discipline to get. Most people will never have and extra 5k to spend on a watch. Having a nice watch shows others that you have worked at something to get where you are.

Great blending of a small mechanical device capable of great precision.
You'd have to be dead inside not to be fascinated by such things.

I'd rather pay a lot up front for something nice. It's better than contributing to the landfill every year or so when it dies. IRT watches, same but more extreme. |

The history (be it the watch or the brand), the incredible mechanics, and the fact that no matter what goes wrong, it can be fixed. It may be at a price, but it can be fixed.
