Hopefully Hamlin has a full recovery as Pronger did.
You’ve got a great memory. This does have a very similar feel to it.

I'm sort of attuned to heart injuries while playing sports. I had an episode called Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome, while playing hockey, and met my wife due to it, who was a electrophysiology nurse in the cath lab working with an electrophysiologist. She later worked in the heart device industry for 25 years.

One of her patients years ago was Hank Gathers, who didn't survive a ventricular tachycardia episode while on the basketball court.

Detroit Red Wings has had a player Jiri Fischer, have an incident while on the bench as well.

My wife and I usually discuss this stuff.

These were all different incidents than Damar Hamlin, and hope this player has a full recovery but it's very scary stuff.

Not to take away from this thread, but that is quite the serendipitous way to meet your bride.

It was good to see medical staff respond so quickly and get out the AED. Immediate CPR and defibrillation (shocks) are the most important interventions for survival of cardiac arrest.

Buildings in downtown Cincy displayed Buffalo Blue lighting in a show of solidarity last night. Many Bills fans have thanked the Bengals, their fans, and the entire city for their support. There was a contingent of Bengals & Bills fans outside UC Hospital shortly after DH's arrival.

Joe Burrow & Josh Allen are friends and train together during the off season. Good to see everyone coming together.

You sound like you know what you’re talking about, and your screen name, Doc, is there a chance for a full recovery? Can you tell us anything about the prognosis? I haven’t heard any kind of prediction about his long term health.

What most don't understand about the heart is that, one, it's a mechanical pump, and two, it has electrical components and pathways from the brain to regulate it.

A cardiologist field is the mechanical aspects, and an electrophysiologist field is the electrical part. (simplified definition)

In Hamlin's case, it looks like the hit disrupted the electrical function and in that case, like the Chris Pronger case, he could be essentially be back to normal in days.

However if he had underlying heart issues previously undiagnosed, then it could be more complicated. And the fact that he has to be untubated (helped with breathing) might suggest something more serious.

The laypersons analysis, with coaching from my wife.

Unfortunately, without looking at a chart with imaging, echo, or Cath report, none of us are going to be able to give you any meaningful insight.

Based on media reports, he’s likely in Cardiac ICU receiving inotropes and vasopressors (medications that help the heart increase output and optimize blood pressure). He may require more invasive mechanical circulatory support depending on his heart function. Depending on the intensivist treating him, they may or may not have initiated therapeutic hypothermia. None of us are really going to know for sure because this stuff is kept private as it should be.

All we can do is pray, wish, hope. I do all of the above that he is fine very soon

Agree with Nick. No one can provide much insight here with so little information known. Immediate CPR keeps the brain and other organs perfused with oxygen while the defibrillation converts the heart back into a normal perfusing rhythm. That's probably as much as anyone can say right now.

What I gathered from reading is that the big question now is, how is his brain and how long was it deprived of oxygen?

His brain was likely not without oxygen for very long considering he was administered CPR immediately and also it seems they had an AED on site pretty quickly, but that is speculation. The human brain can go 3-4 minutes without oxygen without any damage in many cases.

I don’t want to sound… well, anyway. One good thing that has happened. He had started a gofund me account to bring toys to local children in his home town, (I think Pittsburgh?). Before the game it had $2,500. I just watched a sports center that said it now had over 4.5 Million dollars.

This is not a way to help children, but it shows we, Americans, can still be a decent people.

I hope he gets up and jogs out of the hospital very very soon.

I know Terry Pugula and he’s a great guy and owner. Owns both teams. Spends a lot of money behind the scenes without credit, improving sports programs and giving back.

Seems like Demar is on the recovery. I’m just glad to hear he’s ok even though he has a long road of recovery ahead. Seems like him and his family are close and I’m sure some things are more important than playing football. Hope he gets a good job at ESPN or one of the other networks covering NFL or NCAA.

With the Bills v Bengals rematch in 30 minutes I wanted to post regarding the generosity of Gale Benson-Saints owner in the wake of Damar’s rescue and recovery.
