Buying watches from overseas?
Thought on buying overseas?
Has anyone bought from say America to the UK or the other way round? Found a watch on the forum for sale, but I'm in the UK and he's in USA. Never bought anything from USA before and is very worrying wiring 5K across to someone. Any advice? Thanks |

Buying watches from overseas?
The 1st thing you will get is a very large UK CUSTOMS CHARGE ,(EVEN IF ITS SENT AS A GIFT)stick to buying in Europe as there’s no customs charge

I've sold a number of watches to the UK. You'll need to work with the seller to determine what the "stated value" will be when the seller in the USA fills out the paperwork for customs. From there, you'll be taxed on that amount. One of the most important things to realize is that your post office will hold the package until the tax is paid, and will not deliver the watch until then.
I had a situation about 7 months ago where I thought a watch might have been lost, as it showed tracking wise that it had been delivered. What had been delivered was notice the watch was at the post office, and that the purchaser needed to come down and pay the tax on it to receive delivery. Just keep this in mind and plan/budget accordingly.

Living in Australia, where the market is comparatively small, I buy from overseas sellers all the time. It was harrowing at first, but while never being complacent, it has become easier over the years as my knowledge has grown. I suggest the first and most important aspect is for you to research the rules and laws in your country pertaining to personal importation to determine if the costs and workload is worth the effort. Then you should have a basic understanding of the export rules of the country you are buying from, because often sellers have no clue and that can derail the deal. Finally, understand the pros and cons of the various payment methods and what protection measures you can use to ensure the transaction goes smoothly.
