Great review and stunning watch. But don't put your old DJ out to pasture. It is a great watch to have for when the new one is off the wrist. And if you want some fun, put a nicely padded croc strap on the DJ and see how it dresses up and comes back to life. Dark brown, or honey brown or black...the way leather frames the head of the DJ, it become a wonderful dress watch for those evenings when you want to wear a little less on your wrist, but still want the feel of a Rolex.

The weight is interesting as although it is heavy, once it is on the wrist I do not notice it at all. I wear mine to the gym and running. I am 68 so I don't care if it gets dinged up.

It is my final watch, unless my eyes get worse which in that case I will buy the smurf.

In all seriousness.... you can admire a watch any where and any time. I've escaped many a boring (and some very stressful) teleconference calls by staring at my watch. Pretty sure I'd have lost my mind by now without it. Money well spent. ;-)

Yeah, I will have to consider that. I am also thinking about sending the bracelet off to Michael Young as 32 years of wearing, playing tennis in it, etc. has definitely stretched it out. I did appreciate it when I had it wear for the two weeks that RSC had the Daytona when they were fixing it.

The 116506 is the ultimate Daytona regardless of era.
I absolutely love it, and it makes me happy to see my wife wear it everyday.
She refuses to let me wear it again.....

If you have never handled one in person, you owe it to yourself to try it.

Hey chiboy what an awesome review! I just got a WG Daytona and the idea of a Platona always dances in my mind. It was really cool following your story. Thanks again and we will wait for the 2 year review...

Thanks Lum! Love the WG Daytona too. Did you get the awesome blue dial, one of the new oh-so-cool OF ceramics, or something else? There are no bad Daytona choices.

Very nice write up and thank you for sharing. I would say definitely don't sell the DJ that you've had for so long. Even if you don't wear it keep it for all the memories you've had while wearing it.

Yes, I remember. You were selling yours just as I was ramping up my search for one.

I know that's the popular sentiment on here, and I likely will keep it since it isn't worth a great deal. But I don't fully see why the watch I wore when I got married, went to Europe, etc. is a keeper and the shoes I was wearing at the same time isn't.

I don't think you could have picked any better IMO. This is THE Rolex on the modern reference for me. Beautiful in every way and does not cease to shock/awe when seen in person. Congrats and keep on rockin' this bad boy.

Thanks for the write - up. Hopefully someday soon I shall upgrade to the Platona! One glance at the Ice blue dial and you know it’s the big daddy Daytona! Have you gotten any nice comments on it?

Thanks a lot everyone! To my knowledge, it has only been noticed 3 or 4 times. 1) My Daytona/Sub/Lange 1 buddy asked to see it as he knew it was coming, 2) My "lived in Switzerland for about 15 years" buddy asked if it was a Daytona and complimented it, 3) Paul Butros, who was auctioning off the Paul Newman Daytona noticed it when I went to a viewing of the PN PN, and last weekend at a party my buddy asked if I had gotten a new watch.

Most people just don't notice watches, which is ok with me.

Great write up and thanks....I just finally pulled the trigger on the SS Daytona 116520, and so far it hasn't and probably won't leave my wrist.

Interesting you mentioned the accuracy. I set mine using the atomic clock approx a month ago when I received it, and it is uncanny how it's maintained its accuracy.

Great read
