Every time I see the lovely Expy I, I am reminded of how much I would like to own one. However, I hesitate to buy an Expy I because it has the same calibre movement as my 14060m No-Date Sub, and it seems redundant to buy a watch just to have a different case and dial.

Does anybody else feel this hesitation? One could think of the Expy II w/ cal. 3186 vs. the GMT II w/ cal. 3186 as another example of this question. And I suppose someone will chime in with the Air King having a cal. 3130.

Your thoughts, colleagues?

I don't see it as a problem at all, I have numerous watches with the same movement. The OP Date, Sub Date, SD, DSSD DJ & YM all share the same cal. 3135. I would not have an issue owning one of each of those!

I don't think the calibre matters. The calibre does not determine the character of the watch - its the case, the style, the functions, the bracelet that sum up the watch. Many different Rolex models share the same calibre.

With a Rolex movement, the calibres are all superb - to me, however, size does matter!!

I think your choice in the Explorer is a good one. Irregardless of the movement inside, the Explorer is an excellent watch. I have the 3186 in my new GMT IIc, but I would love to purchase the Explorer if given the opportunity. Even though some may consider this to be a step backward in calibre, the Explorer is as amazing watch. If you like it.........BUY IT !

Kind of like buying a car though, isn't it...

Different sheetmetal that pleases the eye, wrapped around the same chassis and drivetrain...

Personally it wouldn't bother me at all. While both may have the same movement the purpose and style of the watches are different. If the goal is to establish a broad collection of sports watches not much you can do about the movement.
