Sea Dweller 4000 blues

I was planning on buying my first luxury watch, on a limited budget of under U.S. $5500, and impulsively I decided it would either be the Sea Dweller 4000 or the GMTIIc; I chose the Sea Dweller as it looked better on my small wrists.

I was trying to satisfy conflicting urges by purchasing this watch. I wanted the watch to be readily recognized but subtle enough to impress on others my good taste.

After reading up on the internet I've decided (post purchase) that the Sea Dweller is a bit of a Submariner clone and mistaken as such. It also has an outdated aluminium bezel and is too common to become a true classic and appreciate in value in the near future!

Have I made a horrible mistake by buying the Sea Dweller?

Could a better watch have been bought to satisfy my shallow nature as mentioned in the second para? LOL!

There is no shame in owning the SD. It is a classic diver, like the Submariner, and is now valued highly by many over the SDDS because of its dimensions and subtle nature. Congrats on your! Please share some pictures.

You have bought one of the best watches Rolex has ever made. It has been discontinued (or will be very soon) and replaced with the Seadweller Deepsea.
The seadweller 4000 is already a classic.
I find it hard to believe that you think you have made a mistake. Your watch is one of the best watches around...congratulations.

Welcome to TRF! THe Sea Dweller is a great watch, IMO they are one of the best looking rolexes out there. I would have got one if they were not sold out at my AD.

ok ... sounds like you bought it to look cool and it isn't working .... you didn't buy it for its legacy or its history or its capabilities .. you just wanna look cool and rich ... nothing wrong with that .... well in that case, you need to buy a diamond studded president or president type of watch, and not a "Tool" watch ... Tool watches are for us morons who look at them and fantasize what the darkness of 4000ft below the ocean feels like and how awesome the engineering/design really is .... this kind of watch will never portary that "rich" look that you are seeking ... you need to get a two tone something ....a rolex, but two tone ...

well you are already having the blues, so I migt suggest a two tone bluesy SUB .... it will be very eye catching .. that dam 2 tone oyster bracelet looks awesome and the blue dial will get the chicks talking ...they will be saying "oooh la la ...." and you say "yeah baby, I got it goin on ....." ....

No, you DID NOT make a mistake... to answer your "shallow" question above (he he), I don't belive the GMTIIc is more recognisable. I have had mine for 4 weeks, and I doubt very much the average person ha ANY idea it's a Rolex (which is fine), although a WIS will spot "shiny" a mile away (shiny bezel, shiny centre links), but may need to get closer to distinguish a Sub from a SD...

Don't stress, enjoy it.

As many said a true "classic" piece that recently became a collectors item as it was discontinued... i have jumped the wagon just few days back and payed for my 16600 Y serial dweller that is now in route to me and will be a great addition to my white EXP II.

All do looks like nothing came with today's post... so ill need to hold my horses over the weekend... a long weekend if i may say so.

Wristworks is right, it's already a classic and you should be elated.

I will add that the SD is more an evolution of the Sub than a mere clone, with a very rich history. Check out the link below and see the earliest SD's that were devolped for some of America's finest explorers. These guys were the first SEA DWELLERS. (Thanks Jake)

Whatever you do don't get rid of the SD!! You won't believe what a chick magnet it is. It's basically like catnip for beautiful women who would ordinarily be out of your league. One look at the mighty SD and they are putty in your hands. Trust me on this!!

Man, I always miss the fun stuff.
