Rolex, Castles, and Temples - Japan

I spent this past week in Japan for business. During my time there I stayed in Nagoya and visited the cities of Osaka and Kyoto. Fortunately, my business schedule allowed time for site seeing and visits to the Rolex ADs in Nagoya.

The Japanese place a VERY high value on luxury items, such as Prada, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, and Rolex. Unfortunately, ALL of the Nagoya ADs didn't have a single SS sports model in inventory....This led me to the JP gray market.

I was able to find a gray dealer which had everything you would wan in stock. Prices are still insane though and even though the shop was duty free it still commanded major yen for any piece.

For the 1st time I was able to try on both the Black and B&W SS ceramic Daytona. Currently I'm "#3" on the waiting list for the white dial, but after seeing them side by side the black grabbed my attention a bit more.

If you had your pick of the litter for a SS ceramic Daytona which color would you choose?

As a bonus I've included some shots of Nagoya castle and Kinkaku-ji temple (Golden Temple).

Thanks for reading.
Kanpai (Cheers) guys.

TLDR : Went to JP for work. Looked at Rolexes, castles and temples.

Thank you for sharing the travel pictures.

Japan is unique. So civilized, so polite, so orderly. The castle and temple are treasures. I am impressed by the Rolex display--I have never encountered such a variety of real ones. Wish I were there. It did not occur to me to visit a watch dealer while in Japan. My daily quest when there is usually good food. Next time (this fall) I will visit a watch shop.

I vote for the white dial, but that might be because my Rolexes are subs.

Nice pic. Love the contrast between the almost shinny black sub-dials any the white face.
  1. 1. Is the white dial a daily wearer for you?
    AND
  2. 2. What other models did you consider?

The food was great!
Had a tone of sushi, oysters, ramen, fish you name it we ate it.

Name of the store was BIG Moon in Nagoya.
Here's another shot of the sports model section.
Didn't capture the other SS Daytonas they had or the vintage rolex section.

I've read that there are a ton of vintage shops in Japan too. And many of the pieces tend to be in good condition as the Japanese really take care of their stuff

I believe watch dealers make trips out there to buy pieces. Definitely seen the HQ Milton guys going out there

Like this Paul Newman 6241 Daytona. 2-3 weeks later I went back to the shop and it’s as gone! Despite the prices, the shops are able to move their products.

I always gravitate toward black dial watches. I like the white dial and think it is where I would go if I wanted to buy as my collection is heavy with black dial watches. Either watch would be great though.

Very cool pics! It's a rare sight to see all of those SS models together in one place these days.

Nice pics! Last time I was in Nagoya we took a train ride to Matsusaka to have the best and most marbled beef on the planet. I recently had Wagyu in London, brought back a lot of nice memories, always great to be able to cut a steak with a spoon.

I would personally chose the black over the white one!

I'd say white Daytona and BLRO take up 70% of wrist time. The other 25% split between my other watches (Rolex, Panerai, Omega, Tudor)

That's a HELL of a collection.

I think I have to go with the white.
It'll be the better selection long term. Just love the contrast too much to deny it.

Very awesome first person description of what's happening abroad. Thank you.

Try to take a tour of the Grand Seiko artist's studio if you can. It sounds amazing.

Prices are the same basically.
Rule of thumb when looking at the YEN to USD = Drop the last two digits and that gives a rough estimation of USD.

The white dial Daytona was listed at 2,840,000 YEN
Which is $26,639.20
