Love my DD40, but happened to try on a rose gold AP...

Visited the Orlando Watch Co. this weekend to get my bracelet adjusted on my Speedmaster, and they happened to have a pre-owned rose gold Royal Oak on display.

Tried it on and wow - it kills. I currently have a rose gold DD40, and now I'm wondering if it's worth moving it for the AP. I love the DD40, but also have a Hulk and 16710, so do I move onto my first AP and be left with only 2 Rolexes?

I would have to trade the DD40, plus either the Speedy and / or my GS. What are your thoughts - worthy trade to possibly lose all 3, or just stick with what I've got? I do love all 3 watches (DD40, GS, Speedy)...

(pic of the AP below is stock, the rest are mine)

The AP does rock doesn't it? I have a 6 watch rotation and frankly it is almost too much to honor each of the watches. You would be moving from 5 to 3 which to me seems more reasonable. Each watch gets its 2 days in the sun/week and one gets a bonus day.

And you problem might be putting the AP in the safe to wear the others. What a great watch.

As beautiful as the AP is, I would keep your 3. That is a nice diverse set you have. That dial on your DD is stunning. Speedy is a speedy, and I say that with compliments. That GS is pretty timeless in design as well.

Sell everything but the Pepsi and DD. Including a kidney, if you have to.

I love the RO in both yellow gold and rose gold, especially the blue dial. I would definitely take that watch over a DD40.

Any DD on a President bracelet looks better than regardless which AP

I knew this question would get differing opinions like this, and that's why I love this (very expensive) hobby!

I hate this question. I’ve asked myself this question before, many times. My PT DD? Or an AP RO?

I'd make that trade. Hard to beat an RO on a bracelet ... especially PM.

I actually sold a RG ROC to get a DD2 RG, but that was on strap, I'd make the move for the AP, and I then went on to sell the DD2 for a RG Nautilus.

I have and those are my same 3 favorites

I’d personally keep the 3 and save up and add something later on

I don’t have either. I was strongly considering a YG DD, mainly for the bracelet. Then I saw a YG RO in the flesh. That has temporarily replaced the DD for my next big purchase. Since I’ve been all over the place in terms of what I want next, decided to mull it over for a while and enjoy what I have, then get back in the water.

IMO nothing beats AP RG if you want a RG watch. I always struggle with Rolex's shade

Which one would you wear/enjoy more? There is your answer. If you like to actually wear the three that you have, then you're probably best sticking with them. If two of them just sit around while the DD gets all the wrist time, then it's basically DD vs. AP.

Why would you trade 3 beautiful watches for 1. I wouldn’t do that.

The AP is very very nice. Its a scratch magnet though and wont hide scratches anywhere near the DD.

TBH every Rolex collection needs a DD. So the only option is to add the AP and keep the DD also.

The whole reason I haven't bought a DD yet is because a gold RO is just a little more. RO > DD all day, in my opinion. Also, if you miss the DD, pick up a 1803 for under $10k -- 36mm and YG is how DDs gained their prestige, and the 1803 is the best looking DD as far as I'm concerned and are a fantastic bargain at the moment.

The AP is cool no doubt but I would think the DD will stand up much better. Before you buy the AP check out the lume. It is not too good. Nothing like the DD and is only WR to 50mm. For looks alone the AP probably wins.

The AP all gold is a stunner, no way around it. The only reservation is wearability. From what I know from those who have and wear them, they really are scratch magnets. The DD will be much more practical if that matters to you. Not sure I'd give up a DD40, I'd find another way.

I sold my RO for a DD40. The AP is super cool looking, but I think the DD40 is extremely more comfortable. Can’t go wrong with either.

You already have 2 other solid Rolexes so I would 100% trade for the AP.

Love my DD40, but happened to try on a rose gold AP...

I'd keep the three. You say that you love the DD40.

If your looking to add a Royal oak - save up. Are you only looking at gold Royal oaks or just interested in AP in general?

If we're talking style, yes the AP is a beefier and more masculine look (imho). Have the same Everose DD40 yet with chocolate and ice dial. Sure the AP is far more sporty looking, no doubt about it. Both are great timepieces.

As for the trade, darn, hard for me to part with models you have for the AP. GS is great dress watch, and the Omega chrono is a solid choice. So not sure what to say, other than nice collection and do what you feels best, yet perhaps it is really that you have TWO dress watches (DD40 and GS). Then again one is leather strap and the other Everose bracelet...

Looking again, wow that AP looks bold and beautiful, whereas the DD40 is... Maybe just the DD40 trade (private sale is better, try TRF :) ) and cash so you keep all other timepieces (Hulk and 16710 are keepers imho). As usual with these things in my experience, patience is rewarded. Don't rush into this... maybe you'll win the lotto :)

I would think if you asked this in the AP Forum, it would be much more decisive. Personally, I wouldn't do it until the urge overtakes you. I find with these things, the desire tends to abate or increase with time.

Really, really tough call. This is one of those where you could logically argue both ways, so you have to let your heart decide. With that in mind, I'd mull it over some more, keep wearing the DD40 and see if you still want the RO. If you can't get it out of your mind, you know the answer.

This is definitely the danger with trying stuff on for fun. I tried on a MB&F LM the other day...I can't stop thinking about it.
