Iced Out

I was picking up lunch today at a local restaurant when a fellow watch enthusiast (and jeweler) I hadn't seen in a while approached me to show me his new watch. It was an iced out DJ--diamonds everywhere (markers, bezel, and bordering the band). Before today, I thought I would find such a watch really ugly, but I found this piece impressive with its chocolate brown dial and rose gold bracelet (between the diamonds). As I walked away, though, I couldn't help but think my friend was risking being mugged or worse in the parking lot.

Anybody else find this look at all interesting?

Was just in Vegas, so you can imagine the Rolex factory-made bling on display. Agree, some of the blinged out timepieces do look very nice. Sometimes, perhaps not so much.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The diamonds are starting to grow on me. I never really paid much attention to them before mainly due to the fact I thought I couldn’t pull it off. Then a while back I saw another post where someone posted baguette set diamonds on the bezel of a DD and it was pretty impressive.

I think he’s already been mugged

I'm certainly not a fan of bling!

But if you like Rolex, and you like diamonds, I guess piling on as many diamonds as possible just makes the watch that much more appealing. That's "the more the better" approach.

I prefer the "less is more" approach. The less diamonds on my watch the better.

The only Rolex I really like with diamonds is the Platona with the baton diamond markers .. so nice!

I once saw a women's DJ that sounds similar. I was smitten with it as well. Never thought I would like diamonds either but it was definitely a looker.

The baguette diamond Daytona looks great and still maintains the functionality of the watch.

With many of the professional references the “icing out” takes away some of the functionality (as in the GMT’s). Perhaps not important anyway

Yeah, I think these models would be the exceptions for me too.

Yeah, I agree! Probably not important at that point anyway....at least for myself it wouldn’t be
I’d just like staying in the professional line, if I was going all out with diamonds, rubies, etc...

I view watches with tons of inlaid diamonds more as "accomplishments" on the part of Rolex than anything that is truly practical or looks really good. It's more of a "look what we can do" in terms of jewel setting. A work of art.

Diamonds in the dial I can understand. Diamonds on a non-professional model bezel I can also understand. When the gems impair the functionality of a reference, then I kind of lose interest. I also become skeptical of the integrity of the case (especially if done aftermarket).

Hi guys just FYI no one says "iced out" or "blinged out" anymore. The term is "bust down." :) #TheMoreYouKnow

baguette diamond markers is about the only diamonds i would consider on a watch.

Patek 5170P is what comes to mind. The diamond platona looks OK too

And me. I think these bust down (see what I did there?) watches are hideous. I like clean simplicity and purpose-designed watches. I prize legibility above all else, with style coming in second.
