From the moment I first saw an Alpinist, I knew it was only a matter of time!

I'm a bigger fan of Seiko than my collection would indicate.
The only one I own is a Seiko 5, but I hope to remedy that maybe next year. I bought three Tudors since last Fall. I'm sure I can manage a new Seiko in the next 12 months or so.

I'm on the hunt for a pair of Aliens. A Ripley and a Bishop. I'm not liking the eBay prices. I might get serious next time I'm in Tokyo.

I do not know what Aliens, Ripleys and Bishops are. Can you educate us with pictures?

If a watch does not have an in-house movement, I am not interested: It is a boutique-whatever. Subsidize the Swatch movement with ETA's in whatever case manufacturer you fancy, but I love Seiko for the broad spectrum, COMPLETELY IN-HOUSE products they offer ...and their cutting edge technology (Spring Drive). I only wish that Spring Drive were as ubiquitously serviceable as a Rolex or (cringe) ETA.

It’s fashionable to deride ETA movements, and yes, they are undoubtedly ubiquitous, but also reliable, robust, flexible, easily serviced & capable of excellent performance. There’s a reason they are so popular – they’re of enduring quality. If any other watch company had developed the ETA 2824-2 (for example) as their own, we’d be praising them for it. As it is, they're all spending considerable fortunes just to make their own movements on a par with ETA. It’s just a quirk of the Swiss Watch industry that most companies traditionally used movements made by others, and through a combination of Swatch money & economic necessity, ETA movements became the workhouse of the industry (and the only way many brands – including some prestige ones – could continue to exist). Seiko do amazing things, and their base movements are bulletproof marvels, but until recently their regular movement used in many mid-tier models didn’t even hack or handwind, never mind show any level of decoration worth noting, and accuracy of timing was a lottery. In-house? Yes. Always better? Nope. |

It's a Strapcode super engineer 2. I like the mix of brushed and polished sections like the case. The straight end links aren't the best but I don't mind the look.
