Do B&P’s really matter when buying your pre owned watches?

No big deal to me, but I’d like to hear you guys thoughts on the subject. Would only matter to me on very collectible pieces.

Yes. On a newer 6 digit model there is no reason it should not come in a complete set, especially if still under the latest 5 year warranty. If no, I would not buy as it could be possibly stolen and there is no way to show provenance. For me it matters. YMMV

It did not matter to me when I bought my 4 digit TT DJ because I was planning to wear. Not sure it will matter when I buy next newer model as long as there is proof it is real and not stolen. A trusted seller OR authorized repair ctr an provide docs that watch is legit. I'm buying to wear and not for re- sale. Just my opinion.

They significantly add to the value and investment potential especially with older references. I would not buy a Rolex without box & papers.

As long as the watch is legitimate, and assuming its old enough to be off warranty, its no big deal to me. Nice to have, but not worth paying a premium for.

I would not buy pre-owned without the box and warranty card tied to a verifiable AD. It’s the only good paper trail for the watch with which to verify authenticity. Not that that matters even these days. There are resellers out there selling a real watch they bought for $6K, taking $2K worth of real parts out of it and replacing with replica, then selling the watch and parts both for double profits. You really never know what the next scam will be.

Good luck selling it for a good price without them just the way the world works. Would you buy a car without paperwork. I would check the serial make sure it’s not a stolen watch, even then it’s sketchy without the kit just my two cents

Lack of a complete set of correct / crisp box and papers on a modern reference is a $300 - $500 deduction.

The ADDITION of a correct / crisp box and papers on a vintage reference can mean Thousands of dollars in additional "value"...mainly because everyone threw out the boxes back in the day

Sorry? You could care less?

Not sure what you mean?

Most of my Rolex watches have box and papers but as I have never sold or traded any watches only my family will ever know if they were important or not.

The poster (Gunter) means “couldn’t care less”. In some countries people just get the saying wrong all the time

It used to be a firm deal breaker but now I think life is too short and I flip a lot so it doesn't bother me anymore if I can get the watch I want significantly cheaper as long as its from a reputable seller.

Absolutely! Never buy a watch without B&P. For me they are just as important as the watch itself!

I’d add that it makes no difference when buying - IF you have other solid evidence of the legitimate provenance of the watch

depends on the price and collectible nature of the watch. i always aim for full sets no matter the age.

Here in Asia, where most of the fakes are made, box and papers make a lot of difference. 10 to 20% of the selling price I gather.

Not many Rolex watches get stolen with box and papers. I am not going to be the guy who sends my watch into Rolex for a service and it comes back as a stolen watch. You can take that risk, not me.

The reality is, unless you are going vintage, like 40 years ago vintage, there are plenty of whatever you want with box and papers.

Do B&P’s really matter when buying your pre owned watches?

Every watch I purchase is a complete set. I like the paperwork, boxes, etc... and don’t mind paying to have them.

For older watches I would accept RSC service papers in lieu of the original box and papers
