Sydney Rolex
I was in Sydney this week and popped into the Rolex store in Martin Place. I counted 6 sales assistants plus the security guy / doorman. As for watches, all they had was a handful of ladies' datejusts and a couple of 36mm OPs. That's it - nothing else in stock. What is the point of having so many staff sit there idly and tell anyone coming in that they have nothing to sell? I think Rolex has lost the plot.

Everyone knows Australia is f**ked to by any Rolex. Dont even waste your time or effort.
Just go O/S to buy. You can have any watch you want anytime and give yourself a nice little holiday. |

I'm trying to get a Sub and reside in Adelaide. We only have one A.D who tells me the list is yearrrrsss long. I don't know if its an actual depiction of the current state of rolex in australia. Or that the AD wont sell to a random walk in.. Thoughts? |

Last time I was in that store in Sydney (it was a few years ago) I don't remember them having much to look at either although they showed me a nice Red Submariner (which I couldn't remotely afford) and another used Sub Date. They were very nice people.
A year ago the AD in Brisbane had a number of OPs, some DJs and all the Cellinis but I don't remember any new sports watches, although they did have a number of nice second-hand ones.

And according the reliable gospel that is Archie Luxury/Paul Pluta, prices in Australia are about to be increased by 10% (due to the currency issues, more than a re-pricing of the watches per se).

Nice One Archie!
Yeah I'm in Sydney and buying a rolex retail is not happening. no pm sports watches, nothing. i get in touch with davidsw and do it that way. people on this forum do nothing but complain about rolex availability and prices and i get it but goodness it is a bit grim down here in the antipodes. prices thru the greys are just terrible because of gst and of course their suppliers are same ones i access via internet by and large. even back in the days of glory when aud was at parity and Hulk (for example) was less than retail price and instantly available, ADs in Sydney a bit pointless because they were so off the boil with prices you could get OS. we need in australia a watch owners group that seeks to trade watches with cash balancing. watch liquidity in america for example seems much higher. this way you could move your collection about without heartbreak of trying to sell in such a small market. and of course this is motivated for me by the fact that prices greys offer for watches are around 20% below forum prices say (and around 30% below chrono24 prices). are people doing this kind of trading in watch groups i wonder? |

ADs in Australia have ALWAYS been bad. Even long before this craze started there was not much choice - you can forget about it these days.

I went into the AD at Martin Place a few years ago. I wanted them to remove a link from a new Rolex I got my father as a gift from the USA. They initially did not want to do that without me showing them the warranty card. Totally arrogant obnoxious store. I don’t live in Australia (although all my family does) and I would never give them any business if I did.

I was in Sydney last week Wednesday through Friday. Absolutely nothing, though I did spot a 2-tone black sub in Swiss Concept. No chance, it was being shown to a ‘suspected’ regular and not an extra piece left. I even had to put myself on waiting list at J.Farren for a 2-tone gmt?! Oh, no waiting list for SS gmt, they won’t even consider putting you on a list for that.
Interestingly, I scooped up a milgauss at the airport. There’s a 40mm SS YM and a Rhodium OP39 but all these were taken out from the store and shown to me. The only SS were a black and white OP39 in the open. |

I believe there is a public Facebook group called Australian Watch Buy, Swap and Sell. Can't vouch for it, since I'm not on FB, but I've seen references to #AWBSS on IG. If you're on FB, you should check it out.
I usually deal directly with the Trusted Sellers on TRF. They're used to dealing with Aussies and are usually fair with trade-in prices, etc. You need to time it right with the AUD:USD, although at the moment it seems the price of any Rolex model keeps going north. Quote:

I would love to see a "for sale" section designated for individual Countries.
But then again there wouldn't be anything for sale in Australia!

If you’re in Australia buying from trusted sources here on TRF, then after factoring shipping and import taxes and duties, the deal suddenly becomes very average.

The only way to get your desired Rolex in Sydney is by spending a 100k with any of the AD's.

With all the hype around sports models, the already limited stock in Australia is immediately snapped up and sold for profit. It is starting to look like the resellers are having issues moving this stock. I hope things will get better, but I am not holding my breath.

You can get all the popular sports models in Sydney. Just head up the road to the Strand Arcade and give them up to triple the retail price, and the watch is yours.

Yeah, I don't bother going into Rolex ADs here anymore. You either get laughed at or condescending remarks just for politely asking about sports models.
Will either go vintage rolex or just wait for the next recession to hit before considering any further Rolex purchase.

The asking price is always negotiable with the Trusted Sellers and sometimes they're happy to pay for shipping. They do a ton of deals with Aussies and so they know how to work with Aussies on the other stuff to make it as painless as possible. The big swing factor is always the exchange rate.
Apart from a couple of modern Rolexes which I got from a local AD (before the Rolex shortage hit) and a vintage Rolex that I got from Vintage Watch Co. here in Sydney, all my other purchases (about five, being a mixture of modern and vintage) have been from overseas sellers and mainly the Trusted Sellers here on TRF. |
