No Rolex is "entry level". The 3132 movement for an Explorer or OP39 is identical, just the 3130 the same in both a no-date Sub or an OP. Materials and quality - case, dial, crystal, hands and bracelet - are the same standard across the range. Entry level is a Tudor.

My first Rolex purchase was a DJ way back in 1988, or so. After 20 years of faithful (one watch guy) service, I caught the bug!

Have worn a 14060 for 22 years.

The DJ41 with blue dial is what finally prompted me to get my 2nd Rolex.

I have the blue and love each day. My GF has the last model 36 and she loves the hidden clasp.

I am a huge DJ fan and especially the new 41. I have bought 3 Rolex watches this year and all have been DJ's. I prefer them over the DD, the GMT's and the Daytona's.

For some reason I feel as if the DJ just isn't a respected Rolex. Am I wrong here?
My favorite Rolex in my collection of eight is an old 1601 two tone Datejust. I love the classic look, the fact that it’s fifty years old and keeps COSC time, and knowing that behind every dent or scratch there’s a story...I love the new DJ 41 I have too, but it’s the old timer that flips my switch! Cheers!

Got a dj41, people I know (non enthusiasts) like it more than my sub, and my non rolexes. I don’t wear it anymore since getting the sub. I believe it is the most popular (36-41) Rolex apparently. People stared at its lots, it’s very shiny and looks expensive. I found it very boring after a couple weeks and didn’t like the hands after the honeymoon. The (hands) are so machine cut looking (in my own silly description)

they shouldn't be but yes... lets be honest.

The last few years people have shifted from value retention IE having solid residual value below retail to value appreciation as a standard. People are so wrapped up in the money that if you cant sell it for more than you paid they dont want to buy it.

I happen to like them. More so than a DD for sure actually

To some Patek owners, Rolex is entry level at any price point. It is all relative. IMO Seiko 5 / fossil / Michael Kors are entry level. Movado to some is an earned watch at <1000 and FAR from entry level. Tudor is much less than Rolex, but still a grail to some... IMO, Rolex has entry level watches - with the SubC being the king of them for many years (just not in current climate). That doesn’t take away from the watch at all. When you can get a brand new OP for 5-6k, older DJs for 3500-5000, they are absolutely entry level - doesn’t mean they aren’t desirable or brilliant references. They are great, just more affordable.

What are you talking about? It's nothing like the Speedmaster and/or what Omega is doing with that model.

You (almost) always had the option between a jubilee or oyster bracelet and the fluted or smooth bezel.

If you look at the current offerings of dials it's nothing compared to the early days and 80s. It's rather basic.

Flutted, Jubilee, roulette date... this is such a cool watch!!! I have tried a 36mm DD and it looked great. Though for some reason, 36mm DJ look too small on my wrist. It’s a shame as I think they are amongst the greatest Rolex references (new or old) - and can be obtained at a reasonable price point.

The date just is one of the most versatile watch models ever. It is a dressy but casual watch, practical and just as reliable as the others in the professional line. It is the benchmark for which other watch brands aspire to emulate or replicate.

Its relative availability is a godsend for those who wish to enjoy the AD experience right away.

Judging from other people’s cool reception to it makes me wonder why the same people would want Rolex to flood the market with its professional line.

To me a Vintage Tudor is more of a grail than a newer one. Back when Tudor was basically a Rolex with a different movement. Tudor today is a breed on to it self.

Couldn’t agree more. Two things that bug me for some reason is when people say “Rolex has no entry level”, not just because I disagree as Rolex 100% has cheaper alternatives, but mainly because people have this negative connotation tied to the term “entry level”, which is just vanity and ill-conceived pride. The other thing that annoys me, is when they say Tudor is an entry level Rolex. Though they are the same company, Tudor has taken a life form of its own. I agree (other than vintage masterpieces), Tudor is more affordable than Rolex. However IMO, saying Tudor is entry level Rolex, is same as saying omega is entry level Rolex - different brands, different identities, different watches.

Well said! One thing I'd add is Tudor being an entry level into the Rolex umbrella but not for watches in general.

2 x bracelet options
8 x bezel
3 x hour markers
12 x dial variations

Think that’s quite a lot of variations mon ami

I have a 166710 GMT an 114300 OP39 and I’d still consider a DJ at some point. Ain’t nothing wrong with DJs. Lovely classic Rolex pieces.

The GF loves this configuration. She thinks the roulette is fun and the hidden clasp is her taste. She didn’t like the new DJ36 clasp. Perfect watch for her.

I like the roulette wheel and I think that should still be an option or perhaps a different colour combo. I think it adds flavour to the watch. I also think getting rid of the hidden clasp was a big mistake. I felt lucky to be able to still find the 116234 model for her in blue.

Whatever you want to believe. It's nothing like Omega does with the Speedmaster line-up.

If you didn’t have variations like this you would always see the same watch over and over. Ferrari has several cars with many packages. No different.

The AirKing has fewer fans than the Milgauss.

I think that anyone who looks down on the Date Just, just hasn't owned one yet.

DJ's are awesome. Went through a phase a few years ago where I had several. At some point my tastes changes and I did not like 36mm on me anymore so sold them off, and I have not tried a new larger version yet.
Do not think they are looked down on here or anywhere else. Pro models are just more popular here.

I like a DJ also, it was my first Rolex back in the 80's. I don't have it anymore but I do plan to get another.
