Dodging Sales Tax

I have noticed on a few posts that members are getting really good discounts from AD's AND also avoiding sales tax! Are you guys just buying from out of state AD's or do you just have really good relations with your local AD?

I wouldn't call it "dodging sale tax". I would call it, knowing how to utilize the system to obtain maximum benefits for yourself.... Especially since many in "some" government "somewhere" has people whom choose not to pay taxes till they try to get positions in said government and realize they too have used the system to benefit themselves...

Hope this is not misconstrued as a political rant...

It's just an observation....

BUY LOCAL.

When you avoid sales tax, you are not giving back to your community or city....JK!

There has been a bunch of commercials aired locally about this.....

Either buy from an out of state AD or have the watch shipped out of state (and subsequently shipped back). Easy.

You take a chance when you avoid paying your states sales tax. States are starting to look in to this, IMO they are going to try to clamp down on sales tax cheats. I was audited a few years ago. A buddy on mine got nailed last year, it cost him lots of aggravation and much more then if he had just paid the sales tax to start with. His was on purchasing a number of computers from out of state and not reporting and paying the sales tax.

In my state you are suppose to pay the sales tax even though you purchased the item out of state. I don't know if anyone does but....

You can not avoid the obligation of paying a sales tax. Even if a taxable item is purchased from an out of state vendor, the consumer is required to self impose a "use" tax of X% and remit to the state of residence. In reality, the vast majority of consumers do not remit the use tax. Most state revenue departments do not go after individuals because it is cost prohibitive. However, there are big bucks involved in auditing businesses.

You mean like IRS employees that give themselves $8000 dollar new house credit?

OP: I have an AD here who would be happy to give you a discount and ship it to you.

If you buy it overseas, and pay duty, do you need to remit state sales tax as well?

"Dodging sales tax" does imply illegality. It's perfectly legal to make internet purchases that don't charge sales tax, though that may not be the case for much longer.

If I'm not mistaken, making phone purchases outside of the state you live in requires you to declare that purchase on your income tax return, but I'm betting not many people do that.

Only if you're going to title/register it and use it on Florida roads.

I do it all the time. Every time I use Amazon I send the state of Massachusetts a check.
