Thoughts on this 3940

Looking at this 3940 from a private seller. Watch is dated to 1989. The movement numbers on the COO and engraving match. Also, the watch has had a service earlier this year from PP and the receipt has the movement number matching as well.

I have two observations however. I have come across a few deployants where the Calatrava filigree isn't exactly round but a little 'squished' including the one on this particular example. Also, I am unable to make out any hallmarks from the pictures.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I believe a 3940 from 1989 would not have a sapphire case back. The 3941 had a sapphire case back . Gold Mark's could have been lost with polishing, but I was told at HSWA the gold Mark's vary with source of case

I believe that style of deployant was in use in the late 80s and early 90s.

I can’t speak personally to the 3940 from that era, but there are Calatravas from that era that have hallmarks between the lugs and on the side(s) of the case.

Usually the 3940 has hallmarks on the back though afaik. I would want to see hallmarks somewhere...

This and another ad on Chrono24 (that one from 89) also has both sapphire and gold case backs. Wonder what's going on

Yeah, the waitlist is unreal!

Anyone have any idea how the watch has a display case back along with a solid one?

Modern PCs like the 5140 and the 5327, that replaced the 3940, come with both a solid and sapphire caseback.

Perhaps someone here with greater knowledge of the 3940/1 series can explain which year models came with a single caseback and which year models came with dual casebacks,
